George Â鶹ÊÓƵ researchers are leading a Department of Energy–funded project to make AI more energy-efficient and private by using brain-inspired computing and novel spintronic devices.

Led by Associate Professor Jinwei Ye, Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Imaging and Vision Lab pioneers breakthroughs in computer vision, computational photography, digital content creation, and immersive technologies—offering students hands-on experience with state-of-the-art imaging systems such as a new Light Stage and Pixel Cube.

Associate Professor Kenneth Strazzeri's innovative teaching methods and curriculum tweaks significantly improved student engagement and success in Â鶹ÊÓƵ's STAT 250 course, resulting in an impressive 80% attendance rate across its sections and a strong foundation in statistical concepts for nearly one thousand students each semester.

Virginia CyberSlam 2025 at Â鶹ÊÓƵ brought together nearly 500 high school students from across the commonwealth for a day of talks and hands-on workshops aimed at inspiring future cybersecurity professionals.

By developing a new machine learning algorithm to apply variational inference to spatial statistics, Jin Hyung Lee has significantly improved high-dimensional data analysis efficiency and accuracy. The PhD candidate in the Department of Statistics received the 2024 Korean International Statistical Society Outstanding Student Paper Award for his work.

Mechanical engineering’s Jeffrey Moran continues to prepare an experiment to be carried out on the International Space Station (ISS). Via a powerful microscope in microgravity, the team plans to observe how common atmospheric aerosols move across a temperature gradient, information which would inform climate predictions, geoengineering proposals, and even HVAC applications.

Assistant Professor Zhuangdi Zhu is collaborating with the University of Virginia’s Wajih Ul Hassan to develop scalable host-based intrusion detection systems using federated learning, enhancing cybersecurity while ensuring data privacy.

George Â鶹ÊÓƵ researcher Carlotta Domeniconi is working with the Department of Homeland Security to leverage machine learning and natural language processing to model—and uncover—human smuggling networks.  

From degrees in engineering and geoinformation science to her current role as a director in AI and machine learning, Adjunct Professor Aisha Behr brings a wealth of industry experience to the classroom, inspiring students with real-world knowledge and innovative teaching methods.
