A �鶹��Ƶ team including a high school student, a postdoctoral scholar, and a mechanical engineering professor has developed a way to use spent coffee grounds to remove diverse contaminants from water.

ECE assistant professor Maryam Parsa is one of the four principal investigators on a $2.4 million project funded by the National Science Foundation to create a 3D computer chip that functions like the hippocampus.

With funding from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), CEIE professor Shanjiang Zhu and his research team will reconcile travel data from three different sources—surveys, smartphones, and connected vehicles—into invaluable travel information.

More than 500 students, nine sponsors, and 50 volunteers gathered on �鶹��Ƶ’s Fairfax Campus for the fifth annual PatriotHacks hackathon from October 6-8. After working for 36 hours straight, student teams presented 70 projects to a panel of judges from the tech industry. 

A postdoc program for health researchers interested in statistics and data science, run jointly by George �鶹��Ƶ’s statistics and global and community health departments, with mentors from �鶹��Ƶ and Inova Health, has developed from the ongoing partnership between Inova Health and George �鶹��Ƶ’s Statistics Collaboration Core. Mohamad Bahij Moumneh, MD, and Jason F. Goldberg, MD, are the program’s standing inaugural members.

New students heard from accomplished speakers, practiced skills in workshops, and connected with both academic advisors and peer mentors at the Your Path to Tech event on August 18. Event organizers aimed to welcome women interested in tech and set them up for success in coming years.

The �鶹��Ƶ Nation’s strength was undeniable at several hackathons in spring 2023. Computer science, cybersecurity engineering, information technology, and mechanical engineering students won challenges on March 25 at the University of Virginia, on April 7-9 at the University of Maryland, and on April 29-30 at Drexel University.

Seniors created an automated vehicle model as part of the Army Strategic Program for Innovation, Research, and Employment (ASPIRE).

At a Computing Career Reception, juniors and seniors in CS and IST networked with tech industry representatives from companies such as Appian, Brillient, and Verisign.

�鶹��Ƶ researchers led by Jana Košecká are using AI to make the Internet of Things more inclusive and accessible to those using American Sign Language.
