In March 2020, just as the pandemic was beginning, �鶹��Ƶ graduate student and autism advocate Christine M. Condo published an essay in The Washington Post that changed her life.

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) approved �鶹��Ƶ’s proposal to set the stage for a reorganization of the Volgenau School of Engineering to a newly formed College of Engineering and Computing, comprising the proposed School of Computing and Volgenau School of Engineering. The College of Engineering and Computing will be led by Ken Ball. The change will become effective on April 1, 2021.

An American Council on Education (ACE) Task Force of college and university presidents and chancellors released a report Monday highlighting the ADVANCE Program, a partnership between �鶹��Ƶ and Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) as an example of successful collaboration to improve transfer student success.

�鶹��Ƶ students are finalizing their plans for the Virginia Environmental Justice Summit, a conference intended to engage students from Virginia and beyond on issues pertaining to the intersection of sustainability, the environment, race and social justice. The conference will be held virtually on March 27.

�鶹��Ƶ President Gregory Washington praised the �鶹��Ƶ community for its collective response to the COVID-19 pandemic, calling it “as great of a team effort as I’ve ever seen in academia,” in remarks at a general faculty meeting Wednesday, which was televised on GMU-TV.

�鶹��Ƶ’s Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution will host its Spring 2021 Peace Week virtually March 22-26, focusing on how to foster anti-racism approaches in the field of conflict resolution in the United States and around the world.

This is the National Society of Black Engineers Week, with festivities taking place all week.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has signed legislation that approves �鶹��Ƶ for the highest level of institutional management autonomy granted to Virginia public colleges and universities, a milestone achievement for �鶹��Ƶ, the state’s youngest public research institution.

“For some people, it will be tough to go back,” said Keith D. Renshaw, chair of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ Psychology Department and director of the Military, Veterans and Families Initiative. “Many of us have spent the year with reduced human interactions. For people with anxiety, this has meant they’ve been able to turn off the technology when they needed to unplug.”

�鶹��Ƶ was named a “Voter Friendly Campus” as the result of a campus-wide strategy to increase voter turnout. �鶹��Ƶ is one of more than 231 colleges and universities across 37 states and the District of Columbia to earn this designation.
