�鶹��Ƶ will receive $1 million in federal funding to support the creation a first-of-its-kind �鶹��Ƶ Center for Excellence in Government Cybersecurity Risk Management and Resilience, and nearly $1 million for the Saving Lives and Decreasing Health Disparities project

Outstanding Faculty Awards recognize faculty at Virginia’s public and private colleges and universities who exemplify the highest standards of teaching, scholarship and service. The award includes a $7,500 gift from the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation when they are formally recognized at an in-person ceremony in Richmond on March 7.

For nearly 40 years, two-time GRAMMY Award-winning, 8th generation Louisiana Creole, Terrance Simien, who will perform on the Hylton’s American Roots Series on February 25, has been shattering myths about what his indigenous Zydeco music is – and is not.

On Jan. 9, over 400 students from five counties and 22 high schools came together at �鶹��Ƶ for CyberSlam 2023, to get hands-on learning about opportunities in cybersecurity. The huge gathering was deemed a state affair, as interest in CyberSlam increased significantly from last year.

�鶹��Ƶ infectious disease researcher Aarthi Narayanan has partnered with the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) and Cyclica, a biotechnology company based in Canada, to identify potential broad-spectrum therapeutics for illnesses triggered by HFVs and similar pathogens.

�鶹��Ƶ alum Horace Blackman was elected as rector of �鶹��Ƶ’s Board of Visitors in July, after serving as vice rector for the past two years.

Drawn by �鶹��Ƶ’s multidisciplinary research and teaching, Missy Cummings will create a new program in the design and deployment of Artificial Intelligence.

�鶹��Ƶ capped its 50th anniversary year by honoring more than 5,000 graduates at Winter Commencement, celebrating an esteemed class that bridges �鶹��Ƶ to its second half-century as an independent university.

This year’s Winter Commencement student speaker is Yasmin Alamin, who is graduating this December with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering.
