After coming to the United States from El Salvador to join her mother late in 2010, she enrolled in Â鶹ÊÓƵ's Early Identification Program and was an academic star at Freedom High School in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Leah and Peregrine Pistone, incoming freshmen at Â鶹ÊÓƵ, are used to learning together. The siblings were homeschooled by their mother throughout their K-12 years. While they say they are grateful for the experience, they both are looking forward to engulfing themselves in a large university environment with diverse classmates.

The tourism and hospitality industries have been confronting increasing challenges related to both the pandemic and climate change, according to experts from Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD).

Over the two past years, two Â鶹ÊÓƵ systems engineering senior design teams developed a tool to help two Maryland counties make complex financial decisions to reduce their CO2 emissions.

As a graduate student with intersectional racial and ethnic identities, Â鶹ÊÓƵ doctoral student Austin A. Deray said he believes it is his responsibility to champion the voices of his communities.

Derek Horstmeyer, who specializes in corporate finance at Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s School of Business, has guided about 15 students with independent research projects and then helped them get recognition for their work.

Freshmen moving into the residence halls on Wednesday, Aug. 18, marks the start of the 2021-22 academic year at Â鶹ÊÓƵ.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ will welcome new and returning students to the Fairfax Campus during New Student Convocation on Friday, Aug. 20. This year, two classes will be acknowledged at EagleBank Arena: the incoming Class of 2021 and the returning Class of 2020, whose official on-campus welcome was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
