Helping the community understand the parameters of recycling and composting is one of the biggest challenges in recycling and waste management, according to Kevin Brim, supervisor in Facilities Management at �鶹��Ƶ. “It can be confusing trying to decide what is recycling, trash, or compostable,” said Brim. His team is working hard to change that.

Jeremy Campbell, associate director for strategic engagement in �鶹��Ƶ’s Institute for a Sustainable Earth, says that at the current pace the Amazon rainforest, in five to 10 years, could pass a tipping point in which it could transform into grasslands. That process, fueled by deforestation and climate change, has already begun and is a threat to the biodiversity and socio-cultural aspects that define the region.

The Office Supply Swap at �鶹��Ƶ launched in Spring 2023, thanks to the efforts of the Staff Senate and University Sustainability.

In November 2023, �鶹��Ƶ students, faculty, and staff gathered to help transplant 1,700 plants of more than 50 native species into two groves near the stream behind Student Union Building I between Aquia Creek Lane and Patriot Circle.

�鶹��Ƶ students are taking pictures of the campus flora, fauna, and fungi with their smartphones—sometimes in the dark—to capture the university’s biodiversity. They are trying to record as many species as possible in this fall's Bioblitz 2023, which continues through Nov. 19.

A �鶹��Ƶ research team is developing a CropSmart Digital Twin to support farmers with increasing crop production and decreasing environmental footprint.

With nearly 1,000 acres of land, waterways, forests, and buildings, �鶹��Ƶ’s campuses are a dynamic, living learning environment of hands-on applied research.

The Green Studio, located on �鶹��Ƶ’s Fairfax Campus, is a permaculture garden, outdoor studio, and lab space dedicated to hosting ecological art and design projects by students from across the arts and sciences. Jennifer Ashworth wanted to elevate the space in preparation for more student projects in the future. She applied for funding through University Sustainability’s Patriot Green Fund and was granted financial support to revamp the garden in preparation for the new academic year.

The Center for the Arts on �鶹��Ƶ’s Fairfax Campus has revamped its zero-waste infrastructure, thanks to the support of University Sustainability's Patriot Green Fund. Sleek new waste and recycling stations at the performing arts venue will improve �鶹��Ƶ’s waste diversion rate, helping to reach �鶹��Ƶ's goal of diverting at least 90% of waste from the trash.

�鶹��Ƶ recently partnered with Virginia State University (VSU) to transfer surplus furniture from �鶹��Ƶ residence halls. Through the efforts of staff from �鶹��Ƶ Facilities and Housing and Residence Life, more than 850 pieces of furniture were transferred to furnish newly opened residential spaces at VSU, an HBCU located near Petersburg, Virginia.
