Biography

Shá Norman is the Director of the Office of Belonging and Inclusive Engagement in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. They have over thirteen years of experience in program administration in the education non-profit sector and higher education institutions. Shá began their career teaching performing arts, creative writing, and running after-school programs and summer camps, while also acting and performing in theaters and venues across the Chicagoland area. These experiences led them to administer programs, supports, and services in arts education and higher education as tools for social transformation. Before joining George Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, they worked in the Office of Equity at Northwestern University, facilitating workshops, professional development, and opportunities for critical dialogue with faculty, staff, and students across the university; various offerings included Framework and Tools for Interrupting Harm, Cultivating Positive Sexuality in Student Organizations, and Navigating Reporting Obligations with Empathy and Care. They served as the Interim Executive Director and Program Director of Play Makers Laboratory Theatre, an arts education non-profit focused on increasing literacy through teaching creative writing and turning the students’ stories into an original show performed by professional actors and musicians at the end of each school residency. As the Director of the Office of Belonging and Inclusive Engagement, Shá attends to the overall climate of the college, ensuring that CVPA performing art centers and academic spaces are welcoming, culturally aware, inclusive, and collectively cultivating an environment where all students, faculty, and staff feel a sense of belonging. Shá received their BA in Communications from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and their Master of Education from Loyola University of Chicago.
