Clear the Air(ways): Respiratory Virus Vaccine Clinic

Statewide Earthquake Drill on Thursday, Oct. 16

�鶹��Ƶ will participate in the statewide earthquake drill at 10:16 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16. Participation is voluntary. This drill includes a test of the �鶹��Ƶ Alert emergency notification system. The drill will end at 10:26 a.m.

Civic Learning Teaching Series

Values-Driven Explorer: Your Guiding Star

Join the Organizational Development and Knowledge Management program on Saturday, Nov. 15. for a full-day, virtual workshop designed to help participants clarify their “North Star” values and apply them in decision-making, ethics, resilience, and alignment in life and work. Through guided reflection, dialogue, and practical tools, participants will explore values as their compass—discovering detours, staying aligned, and finding the way back. Intro to Mindfulness Online Cohort

Learn how to manage stress and enhance well-being through the Intro to Mindfulness program from the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being. The evidence-based curriculum of this mindfulness meditation program fits well into your busy life and can lead to better concentration, improved sleep, and increased self-compassion.

Trunk or Treat: Registration Now Open

More than a Moment: Paint and Sip

Join a Paint and Sip event led by School of Art alum Girasol O’Neill on Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 5–7:30 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus in SUB I, Room 3B. "More than a Moment" offers students the opportunity to craft their understandings of culture through various mediums, reimagining cross-cultural education as a creative, unbounded endeavor. Attendees will receive a small canvas to decorate inspired by belonging and Hispanic/Latin American heritage. At the end, everyone will lay their canvases down to assemble a community tapestry. This will be photographed before attendees leave with their art piece.

All are welcome. This event is hosted by the Center for Leadership and Intercultural Engagement, �鶹��Ƶ Exhibitions, LGBTQ+ Resources, and the Latino Alumni Chapter. RSVP.

Open Access Publishing and the Humanities: Mapping the Terrain

This concert will open with the “Overture” from one of Mozart’s prominent operas, The Marriage of Figaro. Duo-pianists Linda Apple Monson and Anna Balakerskaia will perform the whimsical Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns with the �鶹��Ƶ Symphony Orchestra. The concert will conclude with the majestic Symphony No. 2 by Jean Sibelius.

American Roots Series

Established more than 20 years ago in North Carolina, Chatham County Line produces an intoxicating blend of musical genres to create “a bridge between bluegrass traditions and a fresh interpretation of those influences” (NPR). The group has topped the Billboard Bluegrass chart four times and has 11 critically acclaimed albums to its name. Musicians Dave Wilson (singer/guitarist), John Teer (fiddle/mandolin), Greg Readling (bass/pedal steel), and Darren Jessee (drums) will have audiences clapping all night long.

Fenwick Fellowship: Request for Applications

The Fenwick Fellowship is awarded annually to a George �鶹��Ƶ faculty member to pursue a research project that uses and enhances the University Libraries' resources while advancing knowledge in their field. The fellowship provides one award of $5,000 to be used for the acquisition of library research materials for the fellow's research project, as well as associated research costs, and an office in Fenwick Library for the term of the Fellowship (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2026).

The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 10.  The 2026 Fenwick Fellow will be announced at the end of the fall academic term. Visit the website for more information. Contact library@gmu.edu with questions.

Celebrate George �鶹��Ƶ Night with Cirque du Soleil in Tysons as the Patriots gather under the big top to experience the exhilarating debut of LUZIA. With thrilling acrobatics and artistry, the show chronicles the encounters of a parachuted traveler with the culture, nature, and mythology of a dreamlike land inhabited by a mystifying menagerie of characters. The show is Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m.

Human Rights Dialogues Series

The Department of Social Work invites the George �鶹��Ƶ community to the Human Rights Dialogues Series. Join the first event on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 1:30–3 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus, Merten Hall, Room 1204, and online.

Claudia Mahler, United Nations independent expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, will be the speaker. “Before the Americas” is an art historical survey exhibit featuring 45 works by Afro-Latino, Caribbean, and African American artists, many of whom have lived and worked in the Washington, D.C., area. The Ombuds Office will host an introductory session to Verbal Aikido at �鶹��Ƶ Square. Verbal Aikido is a conflict de-escalation technique that is helpful in communication. Verbal Aikido is an effective and peaceful means to deal with verbal attacks and negativity. This event is open to George �鶹��Ƶ faculty and staff. Join the Office of Community Engagement and Civic Learning for George �鶹��Ƶ's 13th annual Service Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus, Wilkins Plaza. Meet representatives from more than 60 local nonprofits, government organizations, and campus programs offering volunteer, internship, and service opportunities. Fall Career Fair

The Fall Career Fair is coming up from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, and George �鶹��Ƶ students will have the opportunity to network with employers, gain insight from alumni, find part-time gigs, internships, and full-time jobs. This three-day event will host more than 70 employers on the Fairfax Campus each day in the Johnson Center.

Each day will have its own focus. Tuesday: STEM; Wednesday: all interests; Thursday: business, government, and nonprofit. University Career Services will host a resume clinic and a career fair prep workshop the week before the fair. Learn more.

The Carter School's Fall Peace Week, with a theme of "Bridging Peace Building, Development and Security," runs from Sept. 22–26. Visual Voices and “We All Belong” mural unveiling with MasPaz

Join an artist talk with local muralist and George �鶹��Ƶ alum MasPaz (Federico Frum). Mas Paz means “more peace” in Spanish, a message he strives to embrace through art and philanthropy. His distinctive street murals explore topics of earth preservation and indigenous peoples. He recently created Art of the Skateboard, a series of stamps for the U.S. Postal Service. This event will be hosted in person and online on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 4:45 p.m. RSVP is required to receive the Zoom link.

MasPaz’s newest mural, “We All Belong,” is located at the Art and Design Building on the Fairfax Campus. This fall, �鶹��Ƶ Square Plaza will expand free community programming to six days a week, adding Saturday events for the first time. Highlights include K-pop, Latin dance, yoga, live music, chess, and more. New this season, The Haven at Fuse, an indoor space on the 2nd floor of Fuse, will host wellness and creative activities such as breathwork, journaling, crafts, and video game socials.

A Faculty and Staff Choir is being formed on campus this fall. Rehearsals will be held on the Fairfax Campus in the Center for the Arts, Monson Tier, on Thursdays from 4:30–5:30 p.m.

Patriot Web Upgrade Coming this Fall

Patriot Web, George �鶹��Ƶ’s self-service site for managing personal, administrative, and academic information, is being upgraded this fall to a new, modern interface with improved navigation. A soft launch of the new environment will be available for use on Monday, Sept. 1. Users can access the update via the Patriot Web login page. Any actions taken in the new environment will be reflected in the current version of Patriot Web, which will be disabled on Tuesday, Sept. 30. New Academic Standards Training

A training module designed to help faculty fully understand the new Academic Standards Code is now available in �鶹��ƵLEAPS. To ensure consistent application of academic standards across the university, faculty are encouraged to take this training at the start of the semester.

Join the Career Influencers Network

The George �鶹��Ƶ Career Influencers Network is a nationally recognized model for providing career development support to students through their connections with advisors, professors, instructors, supervisors, mentors, and others at the university. Career Influencers contribute critical career readiness guidance and feedback to students.

The network includes more than 500 George �鶹��Ƶ faculty and staff. Faculty and staff are invited to join the network by completing an interactive, 4.5-hour training, which includes modules focused on defining career readiness, understanding how employers recruit students in all degree programs, and supporting students at various stages in their career development.

The next in-person training will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus. Register today.

Fairfax Campus Notice: Move-In Parking and Traffic Advisory

As �鶹��Ƶ welcomes nearly 6,000 residential students to the Fairfax Campus from Wednesday, Aug. 20, to Sunday, Aug. 24, the campus community should expect increased traffic and parking delays.

Traffic will increase around campus, particularly near Braddock Road, Roanoke River Road, Lots J and K, and Rappahannock Deck. Specific parking areas will be reserved for move-in, and road closures will be in effect in some areas. Please allow additional travel time to and from campus.

Key units across the university work together to make the move-in experience as efficient as possible. Your patience and cooperation are appreciated as we welcome the newest Patriots to the �鶹��Ƶ Nation.

New Noise Zones at Fenwick Library

Based on feedback from the recent Noise and Space Assessment at Fenwick Library, University Libraries has reimagined the study spaces to better match the way the George �鶹��Ƶ community works and studies. The new “noise zones” at Fenwick Library help make room for everyone, whether they need a spot to deeply focus or a spot to collaborate. Each zone has an identifier: a green icon for the Group/Collaborative Study area, and a blue icon for the Quiet Study area.

The Quiet Study area is the ideal location for individual study, reading, and small group work with low volume levels. Lounge seating, individual desks, and study rooms make this space ideal for uninterrupted work. The Group/Collaborative Study area is perfect for projects, tutoring, or studying with friends. Collaborative furniture and open layouts support conversation.

Save the date for Faculty-Staff Enrichment Day on Thursday, Oct. 16. This year’s theme is “The Future We Choose: Courage, Community, Commitment.”

Human Resources invites faculty and staff to submit workshop proposals that inspire growth, collaboration, and resilience. Suggested topics include leadership, community building, innovation, well-being, and mission-driven work.

A Masterclass with Heather Lanza, co-producer of ‘The Wild Robot’

Heather Lanza will discuss a range of topics, including her experience in animation production, the role of a producer, and leadership in production management. Lanza is a producer at DreamWorks Animation. In addition to co-producing The Wild Robot, she was associate producer for Puss in Boots 2, and production manager on Abominable and The Boss Baby. This event is free and open to the George �鶹��Ƶ community. Limited seats available. This event will be in-person, while Lanza will join virtually.

�鶹��Ƶ Bands Concert: 'Celebrations in Motion'

The �鶹��Ƶ Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony proudly open the 55th anniversary year of the �鶹��Ƶ Bands with Celebrations in Motion—a vibrant program of historical and contemporary works that explore the idea of celebration through energy, reflection, and musical movement. As part of this special anniversary event, the �鶹��Ƶ Bands are excited to welcome the Centreville High School Wind Ensemble, conducted by George �鶹��Ƶ alum Melissa Hall.

Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble

Join London’s Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble for a riveting program featuring Schubert’s Octet in F major, D. 803, considered one of the greatest chamber works of all time; Françaix’s witty Octet, commissioned as a companion piece to Schubert’s Octet; and a special work commissioned by the Academy.

�鶹��Ƶ Artist-in-Residence: Papermoon Puppet Theatre
Saturday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Indonesia’s innovative Papermoon Puppet Theatre presents a spellbinding, non-verbal puppetry work. Founded by illustrator, writer, and theater performer Maria (Ria) Tri Sulistyani and visual artist Iwan Effendi, Papermoon has traveled the world with its mixed media productions that are personal, yet universally resonant. A bittersweet and hopeful piece, Puno tells the story of Tala, a young girl who is coping with her father’s passing, exploring how we can hold and appreciate what has been left to us. Recommended for children and adults; ages 7 and older.
