Sexual Violence Prevention and Awareness Training

All George �鶹��Ƶ employees, including student wage, must annually complete Sexual Violence Prevention and Awareness training one of two ways:

Completing Title IX Non-Confidential Employee Training, online through �鶹��Ƶ LEAPs; or
Attending a live training (in person or via Zoom), conducted by the Office of Access, Compliance and Community.

Join the University Life Supervision Collective for an interactive session focusing on preparing for a mid-year check in with staff members for the current performance cycle. Discuss strategies and tools to help you and your team meet your goals for this performance cycle and the academic year. This virtual session will be hosted on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 2–3 p.m.

Participants will identify strategies to engage staff in mid-cycle performance conversations, recognize the importance of revisiting performance goals, and identify a timeline for engaging in these conversations with staff. RSVP.

Hayden Center event: The CIA in the 21st Century

Join the Hayden Center for a special event on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m., when it hosts Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Tim Weiner for a deep dive into his new book, The Mission: The CIA in the 21st Century, a New York Times bestseller. Weiner will be joined by NPR’s Greg Myre for an unfiltered conversation about the agency’s battles, successes, and setbacks, and the future of American intelligence. Internationally acclaimed pianist Jeffrey Siegel returns for his Keyboard Conversations® concerts with commentary. New Dining Options on Campus

�鶹��Ƶ Dining is bringing exciting innovations to campus dining for the fall semester. Get all the details at dining.gmu.edu. Changes include:

Ace Sushi will be the new sushi vendor in the Johnson Center, with an expanded menu.
New Market Convenience Stores are now located in the Johnson Center, Blue Ridge, and Rogers Hall.
The Difference Baker has relocated to Rogers Hall (where Subway was formerly located).
The Patriot Coffee Shop will debut in the Nguyen Engineering Building, offering We Proudly Brew Starbucks coffee beverages and an expanded menu.
The Eaterie will offer a new concept: Chaat House, featuring Indian-inspired dishes.
The Sip Sip Club is back for another year. New and improved Sip Sip cups are available at the Market Convenience Store in the Johnson Center. With the purchase of the cup, participants receive unlimited brewed coffee and tea at Starbucks, Dunkin, Einstein’s, Randall’s Café, �鶹��Ƶ Square Café, and the Patriot Coffee Shop until May 31, 2026.

�鶹��Ƶ Square Plaza Programming Expands to Six Days a Week

This fall, �鶹��Ƶ Square Plaza will expand free community programming to six days a week, adding Saturday events for the first time. Highlights include K-pop, Latin dance, yoga, live music, chess, and more. New this season, The Haven at Fuse, an indoor space on the 2nd floor of Fuse, will host wellness and creative activities such as breathwork, journaling, crafts, and video game socials.

Well-Body Scans and Consultations Now Available from Employee Health and Well-Being

A Faculty and Staff Choir is being formed on campus this fall. Rehearsals will be held on the Fairfax Campus in the Center for the Arts, Monson Tier, on Thursdays from 4:30–5:30 p.m.

Lisa Billingham, director of choral activities in the Reva and Sid Dewberry Family School of Music, will lead the group. An information session and first rehearsal will take place on Thursday, Sept. 4. For more information, contact Lisa Billingham.

Patriot Web Upgrade Coming this Fall

Patriot Web, George �鶹��Ƶ’s self-service site for managing personal, administrative, and academic information, is being upgraded this fall to a new, modern interface with improved navigation. A soft launch of the new environment will be available for use on Monday, Sept. 1. Users can access the update via the Patriot Web login page. Any actions taken in the new environment will be reflected in the current version of Patriot Web, which will be disabled on Tuesday, Sept. 30. New Academic Standards Training

A training module designed to help faculty fully understand the new Academic Standards Code is now available in �鶹��ƵLEAPS. To ensure consistent application of academic standards across the university, faculty are encouraged to take this training at the start of the semester.

Join the Career Influencers Network

The George �鶹��Ƶ Career Influencers Network is a nationally recognized model for providing career development support to students through their connections with advisors, professors, instructors, supervisors, mentors, and others at the university. Career Influencers contribute critical career readiness guidance and feedback to students.

The network includes more than 500 George �鶹��Ƶ faculty and staff. Faculty and staff are invited to join the network by completing an interactive, 4.5-hour training, which includes modules focused on defining career readiness, understanding how employers recruit students in all degree programs, and supporting students at various stages in their career development.

The next in-person training will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus. Register today.

National Make-a-Will Month is a great reminder to update your will or create your will if you do not have one. Consult with an estate planning attorney to assist with the process.

Fairfax Campus Notice: Move-In Parking and Traffic Advisory

As �鶹��Ƶ welcomes nearly 6,000 residential students to the Fairfax Campus from Wednesday, Aug. 20, to Sunday, Aug. 24, the campus community should expect increased traffic and parking delays.

Traffic will increase around campus, particularly near Braddock Road, Roanoke River Road, Lots J and K, and Rappahannock Deck. Specific parking areas will be reserved for move-in, and road closures will be in effect in some areas. Please allow additional travel time to and from campus.

Key units across the university work together to make the move-in experience as efficient as possible. Your patience and cooperation are appreciated as we welcome the newest Patriots to the �鶹��Ƶ Nation.

New Noise Zones at Fenwick Library

Based on feedback from the recent Noise and Space Assessment at Fenwick Library, University Libraries has reimagined the study spaces to better match the way the George �鶹��Ƶ community works and studies. The new “noise zones” at Fenwick Library help make room for everyone, whether they need a spot to deeply focus or a spot to collaborate. Each zone has an identifier: a green icon for the Group/Collaborative Study area, and a blue icon for the Quiet Study area.

The Quiet Study area is the ideal location for individual study, reading, and small group work with low volume levels. Lounge seating, individual desks, and study rooms make this space ideal for uninterrupted work. The Group/Collaborative Study area is perfect for projects, tutoring, or studying with friends. Collaborative furniture and open layouts support conversation.

Faculty-Staff Enrichment Day 2025: Call for Proposals

Save the date for Faculty-Staff Enrichment Day on Thursday, Oct. 16. This year’s theme is “The Future We Choose: Courage, Community, Commitment.”

Human Resources invites faculty and staff to submit workshop proposals that inspire growth, collaboration, and resilience. Suggested topics include leadership, community building, innovation, well-being, and mission-driven work.

Sessions should be 30 to 60 minutes and include clear objectives and engagement strategies. Submit a proposal by Friday, Aug. 22, at 5 p.m. For questions, contact hrlearn@gmu.edu.

Faculty and Staff Book Discussion Group: ‘The Happiness Advantage’

Faculty and staff are invited to join the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being for a book discussion group on The Happiness Advantage: How a Positive Brain Fuels Success in Work and Life by Shawn Achor. Heather Lanza will discuss a range of topics, including her experience in animation production, the role of a producer, and leadership in production management. Lanza is a producer at DreamWorks Animation. In addition to co-producing The Wild Robot, she was associate producer for Puss in Boots 2, and production manager on Abominable and The Boss Baby. This event is free and open to the George �鶹��Ƶ community. Limited seats available. This event will be in-person, while Lanza will join virtually.

Join London’s Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble for a riveting program featuring Schubert’s Octet in F major, D. 803, considered one of the greatest chamber works of all time; Françaix’s witty Octet, commissioned as a companion piece to Schubert’s Octet; and a special work commissioned by the Academy.

�鶹��Ƶ Artist-in-Residence: Papermoon Puppet Theatre

Indonesia’s innovative Papermoon Puppet Theatre presents a spellbinding, non-verbal puppetry work. Founded by illustrator, writer, and theater performer Maria (Ria) Tri Sulistyani and visual artist Iwan Effendi, Papermoon has traveled the world with its mixed media productions that are personal, yet universally resonant. A bittersweet and hopeful piece, Puno tells the story of Tala, a young girl who is coping with her father’s passing, exploring how we can hold and appreciate what has been left to us. Recommended for children and adults; ages 7 and older.

New Noise Zones at Fenwick Library

Based on feedback from the recent Noise and Space Assessment at Fenwick Library, University Libraries has reimagined the study spaces to better match the way the George �鶹��Ƶ community works and studies. The new “noise zones” at Fenwick Library help make room for everyone, whether they need a spot to deeply focus or a spot to collaborate. Each zone has a unique identifier: a green icon for the Group/Collaborative Study area, and a blue icon for the Quiet Study area.

New Student Convocation

Kick off the academic year by welcoming the newest Patriots to the �鶹��Ƶ Nation. Faculty and staff are invited to join President Washington at New Student Convocation on Friday, Aug. 22, from 1:30–3 p.m. at EagleBank Arena on the Fairfax Campus. Immediately following the convocation, all attendees are welcome to stay for free ice cream and the kick-off of the Success Resource Fair on Holton Plaza. RSVP by Monday, Aug. 18. Stearns Center: Support for Assignment Implementation

Have you created a new assignment/activity, or redesigned an old one for a course, and need support as you implement it? Faculty are invited to join a cohort in this semester-long residency, Support for Assignment Implementation, from the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning. An initial two-hour meeting will help determine teaching goals, create an implementation plan for the semester, and confirm subsequent meeting dates/times. Register.

Need Help Designing Your Syllabus?

Do you want your syllabus to promote student success and engagement? Do you want to make your goals and assignments clear and relevant for students? In this self-paced, 10-hour asynchronous mini course, participants will learn how to create a syllabus that aligns learning goals with assignments, organizes course content to maximize student learning, and makes use of SyllaBright, George �鶹��Ƶ’s course design assistant. Upon completion of the course, participants will earn the Level 2 Credential for Teaching Competencies as part of the Continuing Professional Development program from the Stearns Center.

Roadmap to Retirement Seminar

The Human Resources Benefits team is delighted to present "Roadmap to Retirement," an in-person seminar designed to help faculty and staff navigate their retirement journey with confidence. This year, invitations to the seminar are expanding to include employees who are 55 and older—whether nearing retirement or just starting to think about long-term financial well-being.

The session on Monday, Sept. 8, will offer insights into key retirement topics such as financial planning, health care in retirement, and social security. Internationally acclaimed pianist Jeffrey Siegel returns for his Keyboard Conversations® concerts with commentary. In Beethoven—The Young Genius, Siegel presents the passionate, popular Sonata Pathetique in C Minor; the high-spirited “Rage Over a Lost Penny,” and the deeply moving “Largo e mesto” from the early Sonata in D Major, Op. 10, No. 3. “A musical bridge-builder in action...Siegel showed just how illuminating the combination of words and abstract music may be” (Toronto Star). The program will conclude with a short Q&A with the audience.

The Grand Piano Celebration honors George �鶹��Ƶ's All-Steinway School and the 20th Anniversary of the Friends of Music at �鶹��Ƶ. Outstanding student and faculty artists of the Reva and Sid Dewberry Family School of Music will be on stage to display their marvelous talents. The concert will be led by Linda Apple Monson, International Steinway Artist and director of the Dewberry School of Music. Additional piano faculty artists include Anna Balakerskaia, John Healey, and Eunae Ko Han. Jennifer Casey Cabot, soprano, and guest artist Kris Monson, bassist, will also perform. George �鶹��Ƶ's faculty piano ensemble (eight hands) will also be showcased.

20th ARTS by George! Headlining Performance: An Evening with Darren Criss
Saturday, Sept. 27, at 5 p.m.

Since bursting onto the pop-culture landscape over a decade ago in Fox TV's hit show Glee, Tony, Emmy, and Golden Globe winner Darren Criss has embodied the kind of kaleidoscopic artistry that's entirely uninhibited by form or genre. For this concert, Criss will perform well-known songs featured throughout his wildly eclectic career as both a songwriter and performer, including those from Glee, StarKid Productions, and the Broadway shows in which he has starred. Criss is currently starring in and received the 2025 Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for the critically acclaimed Broadway hit Maybe Happy Ending. New AI Guidelines and Tools for �鶹��Ƶ Students, Faculty, and Staff

�鶹��Ƶ has released comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) guidelines. These resources provide framework and guidance for the responsible and ethical use of AI across the academic community.

George �鶹��Ƶ’s enterprise AI platform, PatriotAI, represents the first major outcome of the university’s strategic partnership with Microsoft and Cloudforce to start a meaningful and thoughtful integration of artificial intelligence capabilities into university operations.

Through a suite of six specialized AI tools, called agents, PatriotAI offers secure, university-managed access to large language models that aid academic work, studies, and student life. Each agent was co-developed with members of the George �鶹��Ƶ community, including the AI Visioning Task Force, and they represent our first lineup of AI tools designed to enhance learning, instruction, research, and administration across campus. Branded Products Educational Seminar

Join the Office of University Branding for a Branded Products Educational Seminar on Thursday, July 31, located in George's at the Johnson Center on the Fairfax Campus. Two 90-minute sessions will be facilitated in partnership with licensed vendor Pat Dome. Register by July 28. Anyone who purchases George �鶹��Ƶ-branded products should attend.

Participants will learn about the following:

Proper use of the university logo on products
Selecting products that are “on brand” with George �鶹��Ƶ’s colors
Navigating the limitations of printing the logo on small products
The licensing process cycle and the production process
Different uses of the brand across the university
Different embellishment options of the logo
Requesting a two-color version of a unit logo

�鶹��Ƶ has launched �鶹��Ƶ Career Academy, a new online learning resource that is free for current students, faculty, and staff to develop new skills. �鶹��Ƶ Career Academy is also available to displaced workers, including federal workers and contractors in the region, for a small registration fee.

�鶹��Ƶ Career Academy offers access to more than 90 online micro-credential courses and industry-recognized certifications in fields such as data analytics, cybersecurity, project management, and information technology support. Read more.

�鶹��Ƶ has selected Chartwells Higher Education, a national leader in campus dining, as its new dining services provider, following a comprehensive and competitive RFP process. George �鶹��Ƶ’s contract with Chartwells started July 1 and is expected to transform dining on campus. Further information will be shared in the coming months about the transition process, upcoming opportunities for community feedback, and ways for students to help shape the future of dining on campus. Thrills and Chills with Cinema on the Plaza at �鶹��Ƶ Square

Beat the summer heat with a chilling movie at Cinema on the Plaza at �鶹��Ƶ Square on Friday, July 18. Social hour starts at 7:30 p.m., and Little Shop of Horrors starts at 8:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and picnic blankets for a free outdoor movie. A food truck will offer items for sale. Some street parking is available, as well as paid parking in the Van Metre Garage. Kids are welcome, if supervised by their adult(s). Note: This movie is rated PG-13.
