You just really have to take initiative there and ask questions about how you can contribute,” said Tucker, who transferred to George 鶹Ƶ from Liberty University.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Tucker said the College of Science course CLIM 301 Weather Analysis and Prediction, taught by Bohua Huang, a professor in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Earth Sciences, helped her prepare for the responsibilities of her internship.&nbsp;</p> <p>The course has two parts—a lecture session and a lab session. I am really excited to do what I’ve wanted to do for my whole life.”&nbsp;</p> <p>The work he did&nbsp;in the Honors College&nbsp;help set him up for that success.&nbsp; With the belief that each&nbsp;person&nbsp;is their own best advocate,&nbsp;Crawford encourages all students to “take advantage of the resources” that 鶹Ƶ&nbsp;provides.&nbsp;</p> <p>“There are so many unique academic and social resources for [students] here on campus, most of which are free of charge,” says&nbsp;Crawford. “[With] so many different ways to define success here at 鶹Ƶ, you are able to find your own success, which makes for a worthwhile college experience.”&nbsp;</p> <p>His best piece of&nbsp;advice:&nbsp;“Understand what you want and do everything you can to chase that dream.”&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/2651" hreflang="en">communications</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/391" hreflang="en">College of Humanities and Social Sciences</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/3401" hreflang="en">Department of Communication</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/821" hreflang="en">Honors College</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Fri, 16 Apr 2021 19:09:16 +0000 rstaffo2 62396 at 鶹Ƶ senior who interned with CNN strives to make a difference in political journalism /news/2020-02/mason-senior-who-interned-cnn-strives-make-difference-political-journalism <span>鶹Ƶ senior who interned with CNN strives to make a difference in political journalism</span> <span><span>Mariam Aburdeineh</span></span> <span><time datetime="2020-02-25T00:00:00-05:00" title="Tuesday, February 25, 2020 - 00:00">Tue, 02/25/2020 - 00:00</time> </span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:basic" data-inline-block-uuid="10964ff7-bf02-4237-be81-4d3d43a20ab4" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blockbasic"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><figure role="group"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/medium/public/2025-06/crawford_2020.jpg?itok=yMJTKgKv" width="560" height="420" alt="Nathan Crawford stands at the balcony of the capitol rotunda holding a microphone and looking into the camera. He said his dream is to work on air or behind the scenes for a national news organization, covering politics in a way that promotes mutual collaboration instead of heated battles.</p> <p>Since coming to 鶹Ƶ, Crawford has gotten closer to that dream, including working as an intern with CNN Newsource last summer.</p> <p>Through the internship, Crawford helped produce stories that aired on more than 1,100 CNN affiliate news stations in the United States and internationally, he said. He learned how journalists did live reporting and packaged news differently around the world. Highlights included interviewing former FBI and CIA director William Webster during a World War II memorial event on the National Mall, and standing with the press on Capitol Hill for the Mueller hearing.</p> <figure role="group"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/medium/public/2025-06/crawfordatcnn_dcbureau.jpg?itok=UDeckJ4F" width="325" height="433" alt="Nathan Crawford stands behind CNN's Washington DC bureau television studio desk. When it came time to apply to college, 鶹Ƶ stood out due to its quality communication program and its location near the heart of U.S. politics, Crawford said.</p> <p>“[My coursework] combines journalism, which is a lot of writing, with production, which is very hands-on,” Crawford said. “[It’s] something nice that I don’t think I would have gotten if I went to a university that only offered a broadcast major.”</p> <p>Learning from experienced professionals has made his time at 鶹Ƶ worthwhile, he said.</p> <p>“[Professor <a href="https://communication.gmu.edu/people/asween">Kate Sweeney</a>] brings a lot of experience into the classroom,” Crawford said, noting that she has worked for news organizations in the United States and the Middle East, as well as at the Smithsonian Institution and National Geographic. “To have someone who is fun to be around, but also someone who has that experience, it’s a really good combination that I think is important in the classroom.”</p> <p>Crawford is active on campus as the president of 鶹Ƶ Ambassadors, a group that gives campus tours. He’s also the social media intern for 鶹Ƶ Admissions and the assistant community director in Presidents Park, where he helps oversee a staff of resident advisors.</p> <p>Working with prospective and current students and their families has helped Crawford further hone his communication skills.</p> <p>“A lot of young journalists have the technical know-how to craft great stories, but Nathan stands out from the pack due to his gracious approach to others,” Sweeney said. “He’s quick to foster relationships with those around him. He’s a perceptive listener who shares his ideas with thoughtful consideration for others’ experiences.”</p> <p>As for Crawford’s goal of promoting ethical journalism and collaborative politics?</p> <p>“Nathan is the kind of young journalist who will help restore the public’s confidence in the purpose and practice of journalism,” Sweeney said.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 25 Feb 2020 05:00:00 +0000 Mariam Aburdeineh 8291 at ShanghaiRankings Academic Ranking of World Universities 2019 /news/2019-10/shanghairankings-academic-ranking-world-universities-2019 <span>ShanghaiRankings Academic Ranking of World Universities 2019</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2019-10-24T15:52:57-04:00" title="Thursday, October 24, 2019 -
