They're redefining how future health professionals learn. A new national study led by 麻豆视频's <a href="/profiles/bcieslow" target="_blank">Bethany Cieslowski</a> offers the first comprehensive look at what's working, what's not, and where the field needs to go next.</p> <p>"The pace of advancement has been surprising," said Cieslowski. "XR technologies are evolving quickly, and aligning more closely with educational needs. Photo by Office of University Branding</figcaption> </figure> <p>Cieslowski, chief innovation officer for immersive technologies at the College of Public Health, co-authored the <a href="https://journals.lww.com/nurseeducatoronline/fulltext/9900/extended_reality_in_health_care_simulation_.811.aspx" target="_blank"><em>Nurse Educator</em> paper</a> with George 麻豆视频 colleagues Deb Derner, Janine Doran, <a href="https://publichealth.gmu.edu/profiles/alandis" target="_blank">Andrea Landis</a>, and Corbin Rickerby, as well as collaborators from Johns Hopkins, the University of Central Florida, and other major institutions. The review synthesizes more than 100 studies to gauge how extended reality (XR)鈥攁n umbrella term for virtual, augmented, and mixed reality鈥攊s changing the ways health care professionals train and learn.</p> <p>XR lets students step into realistic clinical scenarios: inserting IV lines, communicating with patients, observing changes in the skin, or practicing pediatric triage in a 3-D emergency room. It can also bring rare experiences, like mass-casualty training or interprofessional teamwork, into accessible virtual formats.</p> <p>But the authors caution that integrating XR into the classroom is far from straightforward. Poorly designed programs can overwhelm students with sensory input, increasing cognitive load. Some learners experience motion sickness or can't comfortably use headsets. Privacy is another concern, as some XR platforms collect detailed user data. Successful use also demands trained faculty, strong technical support, and sustainable funding to keep pace with constant updates.</p> <p>Beyond those logistical hurdles, the paper highlights a larger issue: the field still lacks long-term data. Early results are promising鈥攕howing strong engagement and skill transfer鈥攂ut few studies have measured how immersive learning translates to real-world outcomes.</p> <p>The study also maps out the next frontier. Artificial intelligence can tailor simulations on the fly, while new haptic technology lets users feel texture, weight, and resistance. And lighter, more ergonomic headsets will make immersive learning more adaptive, natural, and realistic.&nbsp;</p> <p>"These technologies are quickly becoming fundamental to the field," said Landis, associate professor of Nursing and Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator. Photo by: Shelby Burgess, Office of University Branding</figcaption> </figure> <p><span><span><span>In search of novel tactics to accommodate a larger student body and fulfill workforce demands, nursing schools are developing new approaches to optimize learning, engage learners, and provide methods to ensure competency in future nursing graduates. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>A recent study by <a href="/profiles/bcieslow">Bethany Cieslowski</a><span class="MsoHyperlink"><span>,</span></span> associate professor of Nursing, and colleagues found that immersive virtual reality (VR) training has been shown to be as effective as inpatient training for students learning to provide care for acute care pediatric patients. The performance of student nurses who underwent immersive virtual reality training was found to be better overall than that of their counterparts who received inpatient clinical training.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淭he use of VR continues to grow in clinical nursing practice; however, the existing body of evidence on VR, especially immersive virtual reality, is limited. Photo by: Shelby Burgess, Office of University Branding</figcaption> </figure> <p><span><span><span>The average (mean) scores for students in the immersive VR training group were higher for all performance domains, with particularly notable improvements in the subdomains of infection control, initial assessment, and oxygen therapy compared to the clinic trained group. There were no significant differences between the groups in focused assessment, medication administration, and evaluation. Total performance scores were significantly higher for the VR group.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The mixed-methods without randomization pilot study examined the effectiveness of an immersive VR simulation training program to replace pediatric clinical practice for a convenience sample of junior-level prelicensure nursing students. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1876139923000087?dgcid=author">鈥淭he Development and Pilot Testing of Immersive Virtual Reality Simulation Training for Prelicensure Nursing Students: A Quasi-Experimental Study鈥</a> was published in<em> Clinical Simulation in Nursing</em> in February 2023. <a href="https://publichealth.gmu.edu/profiles/thaas4">Tanya Haas</a>, assistant professor of nursing; <a href="https://publichealth.gmu.edu/profiles/koh5">Kyeung Mi Oh</a>, associate professor of nursing; <a href="https://publichealth.gmu.edu/profiles/kchang12">Kathleen Chang</a>, assistant professor of Nursing; and <a href="https://publichealth.gmu.edu/profiles/coetjen">Cheryl Oetjen</a>, interim director of the School of Nursing were also part of the research team.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The Medical Team, Inc.
