Lott’s grandmother, Ava, who passed away in 2020, sang in the church choir and remains her inspiration. Lott began singing around age 13 while competing and lettering in both volleyball and track at Clark High School in Texas. Her father, Jason, a former Division I track and field athlete at Texas State University, noticed early on that his daughter was gifted in music as well. “[Sports and singing are] both ways to escape the stress that naturally comes with life,” Lott said. “They’ve each been therapeutic in different ways and at different times. I have a deep love for both.”</span></p> <p><span><strong>At the End of the Day:</strong> Lott says it's not uncommon to find her singing along to her karaoke machine to unwind after a long day of classes and practice. Her musical inspirations include Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, and other old-school artists she credits for shaping her style and confidence. “As I’ve gotten older, I look forward to coming home and singing karaoke,” she said. “It’s kind of been my peace, especially after moving so far away from home.”</span></p> <p><span><strong>Taking the Stage:</strong> She was just a sophomore in high school when she first sang the national anthem before a San Antonio Spurs game, a moment that felt larger than life. “It was pretty big,” Lott recalled, “I was nervous at first, but it was pretty cool.” She returned to perform at Spurs games many times since, and has even sung for a larger crowd before a Dallas Mavericks game at the American Airlines Center.&nbsp;</span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2025-12/anthemcsu03_11.jpg?itok=aIMdhuxg" width="325" height="350" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Photo provided</figcaption> </figure> <p><span><strong>Passion on the Court:</strong> Lott continues to make an impact on the Patriots team that enjoyed&nbsp;</span><a href="https://gomason.com/news/2025/11/8/womens-volleyball-patriots-beat-fordham-clinch-a-10-tournament-berth.aspx"><span>its most successful non-conference season since 2009</span></a><span>, surpassing last year’s 11-win total and earning a spot in the Atlantic-10 Conference Tournament that was held in Richmond, Virginia, in November.</span></p> <p><span>“She has such a gift for passing and defense in middle-back,” said George 鶹Ƶ women’s volleyball Head Coach&nbsp;</span><a href="https://gomason.com/staff-directory/megan-shifflett-bachmann/446"><span>Megan Shifflett Bachmann</span></a><span>, “and she’s one of the most naturally talented individuals I’ve had the pleasure to coach in that position.”</span></p> <p><span>Bachmann first learned of Lott’s musical talent during recruiting and was immediately impressed. “We’re always hoping to hear even more from her, without putting too much pressure around it,” Shifflett Bachmann said, “It’s a joy every time I overhear her singing to herself in the hallway or along with the music at practice.”</span></p> <p><span><strong>Singing Her Own Song:</strong> Singing is more than a hobby for Lott, it’s a passion she hopes to turn into a career. Lott continues to reach out to NBA teams in the region and in her hometown about national anthem gigs while also eyeing possible future auditions on </span><em><span>The Voice</span></em><span>. Lott also wrote songs for fun throughout middle and high school, and she has long imagined taking the next step—writing music professionally and eventually recording her own music in a studio. She then got a master’s in music history at Arizona State. As a Met fellow, Kurland is working in the musical instruments department and conducting research for her dissertation. “I’m back in my happy place,” she says, “just working with objects and thinking about the stories they can tell us.”</p> <p><strong>It’s Good to Be Back:</strong> Kurland fell in love with museum work as an undergrad when she landed a job at the Musical Instrument Museum in her hometown of Phoenix. “I never planned to move back home, but working as a curatorial assistant blended my music background with my love of museums.” She also worked as a curatorial research fellow in musical instruments at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 2013 to 2017.</p> <p><strong>Finding Your People:</strong> Working at the Met has allowed Kurland the opportunity to connect with scholars in the musical instruments department, as well as throughout the institution. And, of course, the resources the Met offers are unparalleled. “Returning to the museum world at an institution like the Met has been tremendously rewarding. I have been able to complete hands-on work with the museum's guitar collection and really dig into my own research.”</p> <p><strong>Guitar Heroes:</strong> Kurland’s research focuses on a group of Mexican American women who wired amplifiers, wound pickups, and assembled first guitars and amps for guitar manufacturer Fender between 1946 and 1965. In addition to examining instruments in the Met’s collection and conducting oral histories, Kurland is also working with experts at Brooklyn Lutherie, a women-owned guitar and violin repair shop, where they are building a piece of equipment called a pickup winder. “[Winding pickups] is one of the skills of the women I'm studying that was completed by hand. Take a look at the work of student photographer Madison Schittig, a photography intern in George 鶹Ƶ’s <a href="https://brand.gmu.edu/" title="鶹Ƶ's Office of University Branding">Office of University Branding</a> (OUB), and one can immediately see she’s been gifted with the latter. Via Schittig’s striking point of view— including her eye for geometric lines, shapes, and color— familiar places on campus become abstract, and landmarks and buildings well-known to many transform in startling ways. </span></span></p> <p><span><span>As a <a href="https://masonlife.gmu.edu/" title="鶹Ƶ LIFE">鶹Ƶ LIFE</a> student, Schittig takes classes and until recently was accompanied during her internship by the program’s student support staff, current undergraduate or graduate George 鶹Ƶ students. The phased support that these students provide is all part of 鶹Ƶ LIFE’s mission of offering a comprehensive transition program for qualified students. As of November, Schittig has progressed to attending her internship independently.</span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong>A Quiet Place: </strong></span></span><span><span>Schittig fell in love with photography after she received her first camera from her sister. It quickly became her favorite class in high school, where she found a sanctuary in the dark room. “It’s so calm in there, it’s like a stress relief,” she says. Though she now shoots digital photos for OUB, that love of the art form has continued into her time at George 鶹Ƶ. “It makes me feel like I have a purpose. I also feel like I’m not alone, I have a team.”</span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong>Natural Inspiration: </strong></span></span><span><span>Many of Schittig’s photos center around the natural world. “I just feel drawn to nature, because I like the woods, and I used to play in the woods when I was growing up. I like the trees, I like the grass, I even like the river…because it has texture.”</span></span></p> <div class="align-center" style="min-width: 50%;"> <div class="field field--name-field-media-video-embed-field field--type-video-embed-field field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="video-embed-field-provider-youtube video-embed-field-responsive-video"><iframe width="854" height="480" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Gn47pET26Sg?autoplay=0&amp;start=0&amp;rel=0&amp;mute=0"></iframe> </div> </div> </div> <p><span><span><strong>Learning from the Pros: </strong></span></span><span><span>Senior photographers Ron Aira and Evan Cantwell, MA Arts Management '10, serve as Schittig’s mentors and supervise her internship. “With Ron, he taught me how to edit raw photos, and he taught me all these cool tricks and tips. I really want to stay here one more year.”</span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong>Making Memories: </strong></span></span><span><span>Like many other Patriots,<strong> </strong>Schittig cites friends and clubs as her favorite things about George 鶹Ƶ. The mother of a three-year-old, Fernandez realized when applying to 鶹Ƶ that the housing application did not account for the needs of student-parents, so she raised the issue and potential solutions in a FamilyU interview. Fernandez, who had just finished an associate’s degree in psychology at Northern Virginia Community College, was selected as 鶹Ƶ’s FamilyU fellow for the 2022–23 cohort.&nbsp;</p> <figure role="group"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/extra_large_content_image/public/2024-04/valeria_fernandez_small.jpg?itok=lThtA33_" width="1024" height="683" alt="Portrait of Valeria Fernandez sitting and reading a book to her daughter" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Valeria Fernandez and her daughter in the child-friendly Contemporary Student Lounge on the Fairfax Campus. Photo by Evan Cantwell/Office of University Branding</figcaption> </figure> <p><strong>Growing into Leadership: </strong>Each FamilyU fellow develops an advocacy project during the year. To help address the gap in student-parent mental health care at 鶹Ƶ, Fernandez created a child-friendly support group that focused on mindfulness activities. “Even when I encountered people who would admit to having zero concept of what it’s like to be a student-parent, [鶹Ƶ] was still a safe, welcoming environment.” She now has greater pride and confidence as a student-parent because of the peers and others she met at 鶹Ƶ who were willing to listen. For Fernandez, it was also encouraging to meet other parents who were pursuing personal dreams alongside raising children.</p> <p><strong>Advocating for a New Normal: </strong>Fernandez says some problems, like how difficult it is for student-parents to meet each other, have simple remedies, like highlighting child-friendly campus activities; but others require long-term solutions, such as changing assumptions about the typical college student. For example, inflexible online tests or assignments present challenges to student-parents with limited child care who may need to schedule an alternate time. Faculty members should recognize that students, whether parenting or working, “have lives outside of being students,” explains Fernandez. “And that doesn't mean that they have less respect for your course.”</p> <p><strong>Building Momentum: </strong>Fernandez currently works as a student-parent ambassador with 鶹Ƶ’s <a href="https://contemporary.gmu.edu/">Contemporary Student Services</a>. The mindfulness group she created grew into Student Parent Community Spaces, where student-parents can connect with each other and learn about university services. She is also working to increase student-parent visibility at 鶹Ƶ for potential transfer students. Sometimes her daughter even accompanies her to campus, which Fernandez says she feels comfortable doing because of relationships she is building with colleagues. She has applied to graduate programs at 鶹Ƶ and elsewhere with the goal of someday working in forensic psychology or perhaps pursuing teaching.</p> <p><em>* 鶹Ƶ alum <strong>Nicole Lynn Lewis</strong>, MPP ’06, founded the nonprofit Generation Hope to support young parents and their children as parents pursue further education. <a href="/news/2024-02/schar-school-06-mpp-alumna-lewis-2023-washingtonian-year">Read more about her.</a></em></p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="19f1db3f-25ff-4492-a7d0-8476b3537f07"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="/news/2023-08/familyu-cohort-supports-student-parents-campus"> <p class="cta__title">Read more about FamilyU at George 鶹Ƶ <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="bf5bd728-c0e9-4c65-8b6a-ebd2a4abf49e"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://www.generationhope.org/familyucohort"> <p class="cta__title">Learn about FamilyU Cohorts <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="ce564ac3-66a8-40c6-970e-312e136b86d6" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="3dd9413f-017f-4454-a694-629171be1523" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related News</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-33d38e674e4d4e98624eeea7217c6fd04fa67fe282503a38d8660465a2a9d86f"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-03/electrical-engineer-powers-back-pool-after-rocky-start" hreflang="en">Electrical engineer powers back to the pool after a rocky start </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">March 12, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-03/four-schar-school-student-athletes-score-provost-awards-and-not-first-time" hreflang="en">Four Schar School Student-Athletes Score Provost Awards—and Not for the First Time</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">March 2, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-12/patriot-profile-jaylin-lott" hreflang="en">Patriot Profile: Jaylin Lott</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">December 1, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-11/meet-mason-nation-amanda-haymond-still" hreflang="en">Meet the 鶹Ƶ Nation: Amanda Haymond Still </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">November 10, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-10/balancing-oars-and-advocacy-schar-school-senior-june-johnsons-leadership-journey" hreflang="en">Balancing Oars and Advocacy: Schar School Senior June Johnson’s Leadership Journey</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">October 23, 2025</div></div></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="247d4a85-d580-4b0e-854d-327658ae51e1" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><hr> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><em>This content appears in the Spring 2024 print edition of the </em><strong><a href="/spirit-magazine" target="_blank" title="鶹Ƶ Spirit Magazine">鶹Ƶ Spirit Magazine</a></strong><em>.</em></p> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="5be5df19-d349-4895-96b7-5ddd4d023cb6"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="/spirit-magazine"> <p class="cta__title">More from 鶹Ƶ Spirit Magazine <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 09 Apr 2024 18:21:51 +0000 Rebecca Kobayashi 111476 at Patriot Profile: Arion Lillard-Green /news/2023-11/patriot-profile-arion-lillard-green <span>Patriot Profile: Arion Lillard-Green</span> <span><span>Priyanka Champaneri</span></span> <span><time datetime="2023-11-07T15:43:13-05:00" title="Tuesday, November 7, 2023 - When she started her <a href="https://publichealth.gmu.edu/program/health-services-research-phd" title="PhD in Health Services Research">doctoral program at 鶹Ƶ</a>, Lillard-Green brought experience from a unique combination of disciplines: journalism, theology, and health administration. Her goal of earning a doctorate in health services research comes from a desire to bring these disciplines together to ask important questions that impact health policy.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Asking Deeper Questions: </strong>Lillard-Green studied journalism as an undergraduate because she enjoyed investigating issues and bringing truths to light. She then completed a master’s degree in theology, which pushed her to think more deeply about issues based on theological and philosophical principles. During seminary, Lillard- Green worked as a private caregiver for aging adults alongside hospice clinicians. This inspired her to complete a hospice chaplain residency program, where she spent a year learning the art of spiritual counseling in the hospital setting.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Providing Comfort: </strong>Lillard-Green spent 17 years working as a hospice chaplain. This sparked her interest in the health care field. “Although a career in health care wasn’t my initial goal, it somehow found its way into my work,” she says. She gained insight into the issues people face at the end of life: their spiritual and emotional needs and the physical realities of hospice and palliative care.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Facing Difficult Realities: </strong>Working in rural West Virginia and in Northern Virginia, she observed disparities in access to and quality of care. She counseled patients who were financially secure and who lived paycheck to paycheck. “The most significant lesson I learned during my time as a clinician is the reality that socioeconomic status determines the way we live, and it determines how we die,” Lillard-Green says.</p> <p><strong>Support for Her Work:</strong> In fall 2023 Lillard-Green earned a spot in the second cohort of the <a href="/news/2023-12/arion-lillard-green-earns-spot-public-voices-fellowship-academyhealth">Public Voices Fellowship at AcademyHealth</a>. This fellowship, conducted in collaboration with The OpEd Project, is dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices in public health, research, and social justice.</p> <p><strong>Rethinking the End-of-Life Journey: </strong>Lillard-Green hopes that her research will help capture the degree to which hospice and palliative care providers are meeting the needs of patients and families, along with barriers to access. “We need to find ways to collect better, meaningful data to gain a well-rounded understanding of social risk factors,” she says. “The end-of-life journey should not start at the end of life. Unfortunately, aging and dying well is a privilege that needs to be extended to all persons earlier in the health care continuum.”&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="2ccb6072-f404-4a45-bdf2-f81dbba93604"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://publichealth.gmu.edu/"> <p class="cta__title">Learn more about the College of Public Health <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="695c781a-21b1-4038-8ba6-20176c5e6da6" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="4d12b35e-99a0-49ab-bd9c-1727e4add3bf" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Read More Student Stories</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-a1eb35550a6cd91da71a90807f607e14514ed22fc2b8572d476eeec449011066"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-03/george-masons-teaching-kitchen-offers-students-cooking-tips-and-community" hreflang="en">George 鶹Ƶ’s Teaching Kitchen offers students cooking tips and community </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">March 24, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-03/doctoral-student-brings-teacher-well-being-front-class-dissertation-research" hreflang="en">Doctoral student brings teacher well-being to the front of the class with dissertation research</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">March 24, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-03/student-tasting-start-success-meal-delivery-service-seniors" hreflang="en">This student is tasting start-up success with a meal delivery service for seniors</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">March 23, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-03/practicum-profession-msw-program-skills-helped-student-turn-her-internship-full-time" hreflang="en">From practicum to profession: MSW program skills helped this student turn her internship into a full-time role </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">March 23, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-03/patriots-advocate-george-mason-mason-lobbies-event-richmond" hreflang="en">Patriots advocate for George 鶹Ƶ at 鶹Ƶ Lobbies event in Richmond </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">March 18, 2026</div></div></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/17526" hreflang="en">Patriot Profile</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/15216" hreflang="en">鶹Ƶ Spirit</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/536" hreflang="en">Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/336" hreflang="en">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/17226" hreflang="en">College of Public Health</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/18656" hreflang="en">Spirit Fall 2023</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/17516" hreflang="en">MS Profiles</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/5801" hreflang="en">In the George</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/18876" hreflang="en">PhD in Health Services Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/18111" hreflang="en">CPH students</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 07 Nov 2023 20:43:13 +0000 Priyanka Champaneri 109671 at
