Before departing, students visited the Embassy of Cyprus in Washington, D.C., to meet Ambassador Evangelos Savva. In Cyprus, briefings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered insights into the island’s strategic role in regional diplomacy. A highlight was meeting Carter Wilbur, a George 鶹Ƶ alumn and acting political-economic chief at the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia, who shared perspectives on U.S. policy and economic interests in Cyprus.</span></p> <p><span>Security institutions and regional preparedness were other key focuses. The class visited facilities underscoring Cyprus’s role in regional security, including the Cyprus Center for Land, Open-Seas, and Port Security (CYCLOPS), a U.S.-Cyprus initiative serving as a regional hub for training in border security, customs enforcement, and cybersecurity.</span></p> <p><span>Students also toured the Cyprus Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC), which coordinates maritime and aerial search and rescue operations. During their visit, the JRCC was actively managing evacuations following U.S. bombings in Iran—a vivid example of Cyprus’s role as a regional humanitarian hub.</span></p> <p><span>The program emphasized peacebuilding efforts on the island. Students visited the United Nations Buffer Zone and met with representatives from the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). They toured the Home for Cooperation, an NGO fostering dialogue between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities and visited the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) Anthropological Laboratory, where a bi-communal team works to identify and return remains of individuals missing since the island’s 1974 division.</span></p> <p><span>Beyond field visits, students attended lectures covering topics such as great power politics in the Eastern Mediterranean, Turkish Cypriot politics and economic developments since 1974, regional conflicts and their global implications, climate change and environmental security, energy developments, international law, and the transnational challenges of migration and climate.</span></p> <p><span>“Offering these study-abroad experiences is essential to equipping our students with the knowledge, skills, and global awareness they need to become effective leaders and practitioners in policy and international affairs,” said Malur.</span></p> <p><span>While the week was academically demanding, students also explored Cyprus’s archaeological sites in Kourion and Paphos to experience firsthand the island’s nearly 13,000 years of history. The program concluded with a scenic boat cruise along the coast—a well-deserved moment of reflection.</span></p> <p><span>Students praised the program for its immersive, real-world learning.</span></p> <p><span>“Seeing the JRCC coordinating evacuations in real time during U.S. military actions against Iran underscored the critical importance of human security in conflict zones and drove home the real-life implications of what we are learning in the classroom,” said Sarah Bassil, an ISEC student who was herself evacuated through Cyprus from Lebanon in 2006.</span></p> <p><span>“Our group enjoyed lectures from leading experts, intensely engaging field visits, and great camaraderie among our diverse student group. Cyprus is an intriguing case study,” added John Thacker, another ISEC student.</span></p> <p><span>As geopolitical tensions continue to shape the Eastern Mediterranean, Schar School students return to George 鶹Ƶ with invaluable insights and a deeper understanding of how regional dynamics intersect with global security.</span></p> <p><em><span>For more information on Schar’s study-abroad offerings, visit the </span></em><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/current-students/study-abroad"><em><span>Schar School study abroad page</span></em></a><em><span>.</span></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1676" hreflang="en">study abroad</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/17126" hreflang="en">Master of International Security</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/556" hreflang="en">Schar School of Policy and Government</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/18801" hreflang="en">Schar School Featured Stories</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/336" hreflang="en">Students</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Thu, 24 Jul 2025 19:08:44 +0000 Andrew J Schappert 166151 at Engineering students in Ecuador give locals a leg up /news/2025-06/engineering-students-ecuador-give-locals-leg <span>Engineering students in Ecuador give locals a leg up </span> <span><span>Jennifer Pocock</span></span> <span><time datetime="2025-06-11T14:37:38-04:00" title="Wednesday, June 11, 2025 - 14:37">Wed, 06/11/2025 - 14:37</time> </span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_associated_people" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-associated-people"> <h2>In This Story</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">People Mentioned in This Story</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/profiles/kpopat" hreflang="en">Ketul Popat</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/profiles/sross20" hreflang="und">Shani Ross</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><p><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW214732204 BCX0 intro-text">Sixteen students from George 鶹Ƶ’s College of Engineering and Computing took an early summer ROMP in Quito.</span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2025-06/mireyanddarion_photosr_1_0.jpg?itok=5z3S_ECN" width="350" height="350" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Computer engineering major Darion El shapes a prosthetic as ROMP prostheticist Mireya Moreno supervises.&nbsp;<br>Photo by Shani Ross</figcaption> </figure> <p class="Paragraph SCXW105271129 BCX0"><span class="TextRun SCXW105271129 BCX0 NormalTextRun" lang="EN-US">It could have been just another frivolous start to the summer, full of parties and pools before kicking off internships and jobs. A key theme was the link between organized crime, corruption, and governance, with case studies illustrating how illicit financial flows sustain criminal enterprises.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>After traveling to Monteverde, students explored environmental crime and conservation policy, visiting the Monteverde Cloud Forest and Selvatura Park to assess the impact of illegal deforestation and wildlife trafficking. Discussions focused on how environmental degradation fuels security threats, from resource conflicts to displacement. These site visits reinforced classroom discussions on how governments and nongovernment organizations combat illegal environmental activities while balancing economic development.</span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2025-04/coasta-rica-3-web.jpg?itok=np1bpxQn" width="306" height="350" alt="A man in a dark suit jacket stands next to a woman in green and another woman in black holding a certificate." loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>From left, international development scholar <a href="https://cina.gmu.edu/people/dr-camilo-pardo/" target="_blank">Camilo Pardo-Herrera</a>, PhD Public Policy ’19, who led the trip, FLACSO Costa Rica Director Karla Salazar, and student Sarah Bissell holding her FLACsO certification of completion.</figcaption> </figure> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The journey continued to Arenal, where students examined the relationship between ecotourism and security policies. It’s very easy to believe what certain media puts out but being able to actually see what the border and immigration process is like puts things in perspective.”</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Hakeem Osman, a junior government and international politics major, said the expedition helped him better understand immigration and policy as it pertains to people on both sides of the border. Narrative precedes policy and as policymakers it is imperative to remember that the policies you make affect real people.”</span></p> <p class="Default"><span>At the end of the week, students left My dad, brother, and I spent the morning together making waffles in my dorm kitchen and then we went to the tailgate. George 鶹Ƶ men’s basketball won, and it was a really great game! I’m really close with my family and Homecoming was a great opportunity to enjoy George 鶹Ƶ together.&nbsp;</p> <h4><strong>How have you grown while at George 鶹Ƶ?&nbsp;</strong></h4> <p>George 鶹Ƶ and specifically our English Department, is one of the most welcoming and diverse communities I’ve ever been a part of. The understanding and accepting space they’ve given me has allowed me to truly explore my interests and identity. I have learned so much about myself over the past few years because of the experiences I’ve had and the people I’ve met at George 鶹Ƶ. &nbsp;</p> <h4><strong>Best piece of advice for incoming students?&nbsp;</strong></h4> <p>Don’t limit yourself. I’ve tried so many new things that I've unexpectedly loved! One of my favorite experiences was going abroad, and I didn’t know if that was something I felt fully comfortable doing until I took the risk and went anyway. I had an amazing time and highly recommend just going for whatever it is that you may want to do! &nbsp;</p> <h4><strong>What’s next for you?&nbsp;</strong></h4> <p>I’m taking a gap year and freelance writing. Then most likely going to graduate school. I plan on getting a master’s in something English-related; it’ll probably end up being either cultural studies, literature, or library science. </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="0b0f4749-c23f-4358-9876-9bc1502304c2"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="/admissions-aid"> <h4 class="cta__title">Join the 鶹Ƶ Nation <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="5cfd51f7-9825-458b-be75-d13a0d1c6cb2"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="/admissions-aid/contact-us"> <h4 class="cta__title">Request information <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="97aca680-7a9a-421d-917d-31f9f376109f" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="7c453fa1-a4dd-44db-9965-61d569bdd720" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related News</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-a1af95573dbe88b5d147ee73855c54f5b512bb1600e2c0662dee44a9beb2ac4e"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-07/george-mason-phd-champions-coral-reef-conservation-through-research-and-mentorship" hreflang="en">George 鶹Ƶ PhD champions coral reef conservation through research and mentorship </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">July 24, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-06/mason-korea-graduates-class-2025" hreflang="en">鶹Ƶ Korea graduates Class of 2025 </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">June 24, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-06/george-mason-grad-explores-environmental-management-strategies" hreflang="en">George 鶹Ƶ grad explores environmental management strategies</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">June 13, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-05/sit-stay-buzz" hreflang="en">Sit! This study-abroad experience really gave me an appetite for seeing more peacebuilding in the international community,” explained Hoyle.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Hoyle said his time with USIP will also influence his work as a chaplain.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“Throughout this internship, I observed the importance of interfaith collaboration,” he said. “One of the action guides that the team has put out is called Religion and Reconciliation, which focuses on intra- and inter-religious dialogue, and it’s something I see every day on a local level.
