Climbing five spots nationally to 71st overall and 32nd among public universities, and to the top 5 in Virginia (4th overall), George �鶹��Ƶ reinforced its consistent record of leadership nationally and in the commonwealth.

Graduates consistently report among the highest starting salaries of any Virginia public university, a testament to George �鶹��Ƶ’s focus on career readiness and success.

The Wall Street Journal recognizes George �鶹��Ƶ as No. 1 among Virginia public universities (95th nationally) for best value, emphasizing the university’s commitment to affordability and minimizing student debt.

Significant gains were made in student experience, with George �鶹��Ƶ climbing into the top 100 public universities (93rd overall) and into the top 5 in Virginia (4th overall), reflecting increased student satisfaction, expanded opportunities on campus for collaboration and engagement, and continued investment in creating a dynamic learning environment that fosters students’ growth as individuals, scholars, and professionals.

�鶹��Ƶ stands out as Virginia’s No. 1 public university for upward mobility in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2026, as Washington Monthly’s “Best Bang for the Buck” in the commonwealth, and as a top 50 public university nationally according to Forbes magazine.

George �鶹��Ƶ is the only public doctoral university in the state—and one of just five very large public universities in the nation—designated by the Carnegie Foundation and American Council on Education (ACE) in the highest tier of Opportunity Colleges and Universities for its combination of Higher Access, Higher Earnings and being a top research university. This distinction reflects George �鶹��Ƶ’s preparation of more students to build grand solutions for a brighter future.

High-Quality Education Within Reach

George �鶹��Ƶ leads in upward mobility, ranking No. 1 among Virginia and the Washington, D.C., metropolitan region public universities by U.S. News.

The university is also recognized for affordability, access, and value, ranking No. 1 in Virginia in Washington Monthly's Best Bang for Your Buck in the Southeast (16th overall), and No. 1 in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan region for access (16th overall). U.S. News places George �鶹��Ƶ in the top 5 in Virginia for best value, and the Princeton Review names George �鶹��Ƶ as a top Mid-Atlantic university for value.

These rankings measure how well universities provide high-quality education and opportunity while minimizing student debt and preparing graduates for long-term career advancement.

Academic Excellence

For academics, U.S. News ranks the university in the top 5 in Virginia for undergraduate programs in business, economics, computer science, engineering, nursing, and psychology. It also named George �鶹��Ƶ as one of the best colleges for veterans and No. 1 in Virginia for several graduate programs, including online MBA for veterans, special education, industrial engineering, part-time law, public health, and public affairs and policy programs.

Overall, U.S. News ranks George �鶹��Ƶ 57th among public universities nationwide and tied for 117th among all universities, both public and private.

Forbes places George �鶹��Ƶ as 47th among publics and 114th nationally overall.

George �鶹��Ƶ was recently featured in Jeff Selingo’s Dream School: Finding the College That’s Right for You as one of 75 universities recognized for strong job prospects after graduation and broad accessibility. George �鶹��Ƶ achieves a 70% graduation rate while maintaining a 90% acceptance rate, with 85% of graduates staying in Virginia and the Washington, D.C., metropolitan region to work for leading employers.

The university is Virginia’s largest and most diverse student body in origin, identity, circumstance, and thought. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) ranked George �鶹��Ƶ 21st among publics and 2nd in Virginia for its commitment to free speech and free thought, based on a survey of more than 250 students’ perception and experiences on campus.

“George �鶹��Ƶ provides access and flexible pathways to academic excellence for all students interested in pursuing a rigorous education and bold research portfolio,” said Provost Jim Antony. “With graduation rates above national average and high post-degree job placement, George �鶹��Ƶ supports students succeed both during their studies and after graduation through ongoing career services and a strong alumni network.”

A Talented Workforce

George �鶹��Ƶ enrolled its largest incoming class of new undergraduates this fall, with about 70% of students holding a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and roughly one quarter achieved a 4.0 or higher. �鶹��Ƶ one in four students is a first-generation college student, and transfer enrollment reached a three-year high, with a 4% increase over fall 2024, drawing in more than half of all transfer undergraduates.

To support student success, George �鶹��Ƶ provides robust resources and opportunities, including:

The Student Access and Earnings Classification recognizes institutions that foster opportunities for student success.

The Carnegie Foundation and American Council on Education (ACE) announced Thursday that �鶹��Ƶ was named to the highest tier of its list of Opportunity Colleges and Universities: Higher Access, Higher Earnings, in recognition of the university’s commitment to accessibility, return on investment, and upward mobility.

Carnegie said universities earning this distinction “are higher access, higher earnings institutions that can serve as a model for fostering student success,” according to information from the foundation.

“This ranking from Carnegie and ACE reaffirms George �鶹��Ƶ’s commitment to providing access to a high-quality education to all students who are academically prepared for the challenges of an R1 institution,” said George �鶹��Ƶ President Gregory Washington. “It reflects our values, our student success rate, and our commitment to graduating students who are prepared to enter the evolving workforce in the commonwealth and beyond.”

The designation is composed of two parts. The access portion refers to Pell Grant recipients and undergraduate students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. In fall 2024, 24% of George �鶹��Ƶ undergraduate students were first-generation, and 28% were eligible for federal Pell grants, which is greater than the state average. The fall 2024 incoming class also boasted record enrollment for African American, Hispanic, and international students.

George �鶹��Ƶ does not use race-based admissions and admits nearly 90% of applicants. The university’s graduation rate exceeds national graduation rates regardless of race, ethnicity, or wealth status. The university’s ADVANCE partnership with Northern Virginia Community College creates successful transfer pathways for students and reduces or eliminates credit loss in the transfer process, saving students time and money.

The earnings portion of the ranking reflects how much graduates earn compared to their peers in the job market. The methodology for this ranking involves Carnegie’s “calculated comparison values,” which are based on the locations served by the institution, using U.S. census data, Carnegie said. A value of 1 indicates that an institution’s data exactly matches the comparison value. Values greater than 1 therefore show that the institution’s data is higher than the comparison value.

Institutions like George �鶹��Ƶ that meet the Opportunity Colleges and Universities criteria (Higher Access, Higher Earnings) have an access ratio at or above 1 and earnings ratio at or higher than 1.5, for baccalaureate and higher institutions.

With an access score of 1.2 and an earnings score of 1.64, George �鶹��Ƶ is the only public doctoral university in Virginia to achieve the designation. Marymount, a private doctoral university, also received the designation.

As an institution that has been named the top university in Virginia for value and upward mobility by The Wall Street Journal and U.S. News and World Report, George �鶹��Ƶ is a catalyst for student success. U.S. News also named George �鶹��Ƶ the top school in Virginia for internships reflecting its commitment to developing the talent needed for today’s dynamic workforce.

George �鶹��Ƶ graduates earn among the highest starting salaries of graduates from Virginia public universities, on average about $8,000 more. According to a survey of 2024 George �鶹��Ƶ graduates, 85% reported a positive career outcome within six months of graduation. According to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, 73% of in-state George �鶹��Ƶ graduates launch their careers in Virginia, as do 29% of out-of-state George �鶹��Ƶ graduates. That out-of-state figure is 45% higher than the state average of 20%.

In the 2025 classifications, 479 institutions have been identified as Opportunity Colleges and Universities, which is about 16% of all classified institutions.

In addition, Carnegie also named George �鶹��Ƶ a Mixed Undergraduate/Graduate-Doctorate Large institution, as part of its revamped institutional classifications. This classification includes 107 institutions, or 3% of U.S. colleges and universities in the institutional classification.

The “Mixed” portion recognizes the breadth of degrees George �鶹��Ƶ offers, with fewer than 50% awarded in any one category. The “Undergraduate/Graduate” portion requires what Carnegie calls “a sufficient focus on the doctorate,” and the “Large” designation is for schools with at least 20,000 students.

George �鶹��Ƶ is one of 107 schools nationwide to earn this designation, representing 3% of U.S. colleges and universities in this institutional classification.

Engineering Ranks Top 3 in Virginia and Top 50 Nationally

The College of Engineering and Computing at George �鶹��Ƶ ranks among the top 3 colleges in Virginia across all six engineering categories with civil engineering rising 14 spots to 73rd nationally and 51st among publics, and computer engineering climbing 20 spots among publics to 42nd. Nationally, George �鶹��Ƶ’s systems engineering program ranks in the top 50, placing 37th overall and 27th among publics.

George �鶹��Ƶ plays a key role in strengthening Virginia’s position as a national leader in engineering education, with top-ranked programs in multiple disciplines. George �鶹��Ƶ was one of only four Virginia universities recognized in bioengineering, civil engineering, and systems engineering, and one of five Virginia universities honored in overall engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and dispute resolution programs.

"With 13% of the world’s data centers based in Northern Virginia, the university continues to expand its engineering and computing programs, and state-of-the-art facilities to support the region’s workforce requirements for skilled professionals,” said Ken Ball, dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. ”George �鶹��Ƶ is home to the first school of computing in the commonwealth and just announced Virginia’s only master's degree in artificial intelligence.”

Additionally, earlier this year, two of the college’s online programs made their debut by earning top national rankings in U.S. News. The master’s in industrial engineering debuted as the No. 1 in Virginia and 10th nationally, and the master’s in IT for veterans ranked 21st nationally and 13th among publics.

George �鶹��Ƶ also recently opened its Life Sciences and Engineering Building at its Science and Technology Campus. These spaces provide students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge fields such as bioengineering, mechanical engineering, and robotics, equipping them to meet industry demands.

Law School Retains Strong Rankings and Employment Outcomes

The Antonin Scalia Law School ranked 2nd among Virginia law schools, 31st among all U.S. law schools, and 12th among public schools. The part-time program was ranked 4th nationally among public law schools. The school ranked 11th nationally in the number of graduates employed in federal clerkships.

“Scalia Law is ranked 3rd among the 16 schools in the DMV,” said Ken Randall, Allison and Dorothy Rouse Dean and �鶹��Ƶ Foundation Professor of Law. “Our No. 1 employment ranking among metro-DC schools highlights the marketability of our graduates. The faculty, staff, and students deserve thanks and recognition.”

As the legal profession continues to grow—with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting a 5% increase in lawyer employment by 2033, or approximately 36,000 jobs per year over the next eight years, Scalia Law is well-positioned to prepare students to enter an expanding field and meet the rising demand for qualified legal professionals.

Nursing Ranks Number 1 in Virginia

The School of Nursing within the state’s first College of Public Health set the standard for nursing education in Virginia, ranking first in the state for both its master’s in nursing and doctor of nursing practice (DNP) programs. Nationally, the doctor of nursing practice program placed in the top 6% according to U.S. News & World Report, while both programs ranked among the top 10 at public universities.

“The rankings reflect George �鶹��Ƶ’s leadership in public health education and commitment to innovation,” said College of Public Health Dean Melissa Perry. “This dedication is exemplified by the one-of-a-kind interprofessional curriculum offered in the Lab for Immersive Technologies and Simulation, providing hands-on experience that enhances students’ expertise and readiness in the field.”

Schar School’s Public Affairs Ranks Number 1 in Virginia

The Schar School of Policy and Government at George �鶹��Ƶ continues to excel, with all of its ranked programs placing in the top 50 nationally and the top 25 among public universities. Most notably, the school's ranking among public affairs programs rose to No. 1 in Virginia, ranking 36th nationally and 24th among publics.

“Students choose the Schar School the strong depth of our faculty expertise and the opportunity to interact with thought leaders in various fields of policy and government studies,” said Mark Rozell, dean of the Schar School of Policy and Government. “These rankings reflect the rising reputation of the Schar School for high-quality degree programs that prepare students for success.”

The school is ranked 4th nationally in homeland security and 48th in political science, making George �鶹��Ƶ one of only two Virginia universities recognized in both fields. Additionally, the school is the only Virginia university ranked for nonprofit management and holds its position at 13th nationally and 10th among publics. The school also ranks 33rd nationally and 25th among publics for public management and leadership, as well as 31st nationally and 17th among publics for public policy analysis.

Growing as a Top 50 University

Other highly ranked programs at George �鶹��Ƶ among the Top 50 among public universities nationwide include computer science (35th), health care management (16th), history (36th), public health (40th), and part-time MBA and economics (both 48th).

“George �鶹��Ƶ’s representation in these rankings underscores its role as a leading institution and top choice for today’s career-focused students, both in Virginia and nationally,” said Provost James Antony. “The university’s strong performance in these programs highlights its ability to produce highly skilled graduates ready to make an impact in their fields, with the majority staying in the commonwealth after graduation.”

The U.S. Department of State has named �鶹��Ƶ a “Top Producing Institution” of Fulbright U.S. Scholars in 2024-25. The university has more Fulbrights this academic year—eight—than in any year in its history.

The “top-producing” designation reflects George �鶹��Ƶ’s “deep commitment to international exchange and to building lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries,” Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Scott Weinhold said in a letter informing the university of the honor.

The Fulbright Program was founded in 1946 to increase understanding between people in the United States and 160 countries through academic and cultural exchange. You can find the complete list of 2024-25 Fulbright “Top Producing Institutions” here.

The eight honorees this year come from seven George �鶹��Ƶ schools and colleges: Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera (Schar School), Carolyn Drews-Botsch (College of Public Health), Amy Fowler (College of Science), Chawky Frenn (Center of Visual and Performing Arts), David J. Gerleman (College of Humanities and Social Sciences), Jennifer Leeman (CHSS), Linda J. Mann (Carter School) and Risto Marttinen (College of Education and Human Development). Frenn also was honored as a Fulbright in 2017-18.

These faculty members are sharing and growing their expertise in Hungary, Ireland, Finland, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Spain.

“This recognition is all about the excellence and dedication of George �鶹��Ƶ’s faculty,” said Provost James Antony. “Earning a record number of Fulbright awards in a single year speaks to the incredible work our scholars are doing—not just in their research, but in connecting with colleagues around the world, exchanging ideas, and bringing new perspectives back to our students. That’s what makes George �鶹��Ƶ special: a faculty committed to making an impact, here at home and across the globe.”

Of George �鶹��Ƶ’s 103 Fulbrights, according to the Fulbright Scholar Directory, 27 have come in the past seven years. The previous high for Fulbrights in a year for George �鶹��Ƶ was five in 1994-95. George �鶹��Ƶ’s first Fulbright was history professor Ernest Cassara in 1975-76, who taught at the University of Munich.

George �鶹��Ƶ has hosted 98 Fulbrights, according to the organization’s website, including six this academic year.

�鶹��Ƶ continues to distinguish itself as a top academic institution and a top 50 public university. Today, U.S. News & World Report released their 2025 Best Online Programs rankings, highlighting the university’s exceptional offerings across several disciplines, especially for veterans.

George �鶹��Ƶ advanced its rankings in nearly every online master’s degree program where it was included. The university is one of just five institutions in Virginia ranked in at least nine of the 13 categories where it is included, earning No. 1 rankings in four of those categories, more than any other university in the state for these categories.

“These rankings affirm that George �鶹��Ƶ is a leader in Virginia in producing graduates for high-demand industries critical to the growth and prosperity of the commonwealth,” said George �鶹��Ƶ President Gregory Washington. “We achieve these outcomes by partnering with industry leaders to develop academic programs that prepare graduates for a rapidly evolving workforce.”

A Leader for Military-Affiliated Students

With more than 4,700 students identifying as active-duty service members, veterans, or dependents, George �鶹��Ƶ remains a vital resource for Virginia’s largest military-connected community. This year, approximately 20% of the university’s incoming freshman, transfer, and graduate cohorts have military connections, reinforcing the university’s reputation as a top destination for military-affiliated students.

George �鶹��Ƶ earned the top spot in Virginia and nationally among public universities for its MBA program for veterans, and was first in Virginia and the Washington, D.C., metropolitan region for its master’s in nursing for veterans.

In September 2024, U.S. News & World Report ranked George �鶹��Ƶ as one of the state’s best colleges for veterans. The university was also recognized with “Gold” status as a top Military Friendly University, underscoring its commitment to supporting those who have served.

“We are proud to serve a region that is home to a significant number of military members, veterans, and their families,” said Jennifer Connors, George �鶹��Ƶ’s director of Office of Military Services. “At George �鶹��Ƶ, we are committed to providing resources to support their unique needs. It is our duty to honor their service to our nation by empowering them to excel academically and professionally.”

Strong Performances Across Disciplines

In addition to its programs for veterans, George �鶹��Ƶ’s online master’s programs excelled in several other areas: education, nursing, business, and engineering.

Northern Virginia boasts some of the nation’s top public school systems, and George �鶹��Ƶ playing a significant role in that success. Approximately half of the region’s K-12 school administrators and an estimated one third of its teachers hold degrees or certificates from George �鶹��Ƶ.

In the face of a national shortage of special education teachers, the university’s master’s in special education program stands out, ranking No. 1 in both Virginia and in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, and 5th nationally.

“We are thrilled to see our special education program recognized among the top five in the country,” said Ingrid Guerra-López, dean of the College of Education and Human Development. “This achievement is a reflection of our faculty’s remarkable expertise, dedication, and innovative approaches to preparing graduates to make a lasting impact in classrooms and communities.”

The School of Nursing within George �鶹��Ƶ’s College of Public Health saw significant advancements in its rankings. The master’s in nursing program ranked No. 1 in Virginia, climbing up eight spots to 41st nationally (34th among public universities). Additionally, the Master’s in Nursing for Veterans program rose to 14th nationally (up from 18th), and 9th among public universities (up from 11th).

“Through hands-on clinical training and cutting-edge simulation technologies, our students are equipped with unmatched knowledge and cultural competencies,” said College of Public Health dean Melissa J. Perry. “Our graduates are among the most well-prepared nurses in the country.”

The Costello College of Business earned significant accolades, with its MBA for veterans program climbing to 30th (up from 41st) among public universities and 34th nationally (up from 50th). The MBA program also rose to 41st among public universities (up from 54th), 55th nationally (up from 74th), while its non-MBA program ranked 39th among public universities (up from 44th) and 56th nationally (up from 62nd).

George �鶹��Ƶ’s College of Engineering and Computing saw two of its newest programs make strong debuts. The master’s in industrial engineering is best in Virginia and 10th nationally. The master’s in engineering for veterans’ program ranked 29th nationally. The master’s in engineering program climbed 22 spots to 45th nationally, and 38th among public universities (up from 51st).

The new master’s in IT for veterans program also made a strong first impression, ranking 21st nationally and 13th among public universities.

The strong performance of George �鶹��Ƶ’s online programs aligns with the university’s mission to support students where they are. �鶹��Ƶ is Virginia’s leading university for value and upward mobility, and ranked in the top 25 nationally for innovation according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2025 released today. George �鶹��Ƶ also achieved a new distinction from U.S. News, as a top 20 school nationally and No. 1 in Virginia for internships, reflecting its commitment to developing the talent needed for today’s dynamic workforce demands.

Additionally, the university ranks as a top 50 public university nationally in the Wall Street Journal’s Best Colleges in the U.S..

“As Virginia’s largest and most diverse public university, George �鶹��Ƶ is a leader in advancing Virginia as a top state in business and education,” said George �鶹��Ƶ President Gregory Washington. “George �鶹��Ƶ serves families by providing flexibility and affordability of educational excellence and serves the commonwealth by driving innovation for economic development. Student success and college affordability

George �鶹��Ƶ is ranked No. 1 in Virginia for upward mobility across all rankings that measure social mobility, and is No. 1 among public universities nationwide according to U.S. News, 30th with Washington Monthly University Rankings, and 58th with the Wall Street Journal.

George �鶹��Ƶ is also ranked as the No. 1 best value school in Virginia by the Wall Street Journal (55th among public universities nationally) and 13th by Washington Monthly among public universities in the Southeast. Best value rankings highlight universities that offer a strong education at an affordable cost with low debt, factoring in financial aid and post-graduation success.

This year, George �鶹��Ƶ debuted 20th in the U.S. News ranking for internships/co-ops, reflecting its strong business and government partnerships to prepare students for successful careers and enhance their college experience. These rankings showcase universities that enable students to apply classroom learning in professional environments, boosting their skills and career prospects.

“These strong rankings on student internships and co-ops underscore our commitment to be recognized as a top research university that also prioritizes students’ experiential learning," said Provost and Executive Vice President Jim Antony. “George �鶹��Ƶ students consistently share that our faculty, who are leaders in their fields, offer substantive experiential learning opportunities, all of which translates into long-term positive outcomes and career success.”

In addition to internships, George �鶹��Ƶ provides students with career resources, such as multiple career fairs, professional development opportunities, career preparation courses, and job placement support. With graduation rates above the national average, 88% of 2023 George �鶹��Ƶ graduates report job success related to their career goals, earning a median salary of $74,000, and 83% remain in Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. Here is a list of companies that have hired George �鶹��Ƶ graduates.

This fall, the university enrolled its largest and most academically talented freshmen class to date. �鶹��Ƶ one in four students at George �鶹��Ƶ is a first-generation college student, and a slightly higher percentage qualify for Federal Pell Grants. In the past decade, George �鶹��Ƶ has granted over 90,000 degrees, more than any other public four-year university in the commonwealth.

Overall rankings

U.S. News ranks George �鶹��Ƶ tied for 52nd among public universities nationwide. The Wall Street Journal puts George �鶹��Ƶ as a top 50 public university, ranking it 30th (up from 33rd) and Washington Monthly ranks the university 57th among public universities (up from 60th).

Among all universities, both public and private, George �鶹��Ƶ earns a tied ranking 109th from U.S. News, 76th with the Wall Street Journal (up from 95th), and 91st with Washington Monthly.

U.S. News also ranked several of George �鶹��Ƶ’s undergraduate programs in the top 100 nationally, including business, economics, computer science, engineering, and psychology, and named George �鶹��Ƶ as one of the best colleges for veterans.

Commitment to free speech

These high-profile rankings follow other recent accolades that highlight George �鶹��Ƶ as one of America’s most inclusive and welcoming universities. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) ranked George �鶹��Ƶ 16th for its commitment to freedom of speech. George �鶹��Ƶ’s Patriot Plan for Community Safety and Well-Being includes guidelines for campus safety for maintaining the rights, privacy, and dignity of all in our community. Campus Pride also gave George �鶹��Ƶ a 5-Star rating, the only public university in Virginia, for offering a safe and welcoming campus to the LGBTQ+ community.

CNBC has named Virginia America’s Top State for Business in 2024, and the No. 1 state for education, dual distinctions that highlight �鶹��Ƶ’s impact as the largest and most innovative public university in Virginia and a top 50 public university nationally.

Virginia finished in the top half of all 10 of the CNBC study’s weighted categories used to determine the state business rankings. In addition to being tops in education, CNBC rated Virginia infrastructure (3rd), workforce (9th), economy (11th), quality of life (19th), cost of doing business (24th), technology and innovation (15th), business friendliness (5th), access to capital (8th), and cost of living (19th).

“You can directly tie �鶹��Ƶ’s impact on the state to criteria throughout the latest CNBC Best State for Business ranking,” �鶹��Ƶ President Gregory Washington said. “George �鶹��Ƶ provides opportunities for students of all backgrounds, prepares the state’s workforce in high-demand fields, provides guidance to business owners around the state through �鶹��Ƶ Enterprise, and attracts and keeps more talent in Virginia than peer universities. When you look at these rankings that cite Virginia as No. 1 in the country for business and education, you can’t help but see George �鶹��Ƶ.”

These are among the contributions from George �鶹��Ƶ in CNBC ranking categories:

Education

The Wall Street Journal and Forbes rank George �鶹��Ƶ as a top 50 public university nationally.
Through the Early Identification Program, George �鶹��Ƶ works with middle and high school students who aspire to be the first in their family to attend college. George �鶹��Ƶ also offers students direct admission and partners with Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and other community colleges around the state through the �鶹��Ƶ Virginia Promise to provide direct admission pathways so students save time and money toward earning a degree. Virginians who want help to start a business can work with �鶹��Ƶ Enterprise and its network of Small Business Development Centers.
George �鶹��Ƶ has launched the Accelerated College and Employability Skills (ACCESS) Academy with NOVA and Loudoun County Public Schools, and with several high schools has launched the Shenandoah Valley Rural Regional College Partnership Laboratory School for Data Science, Computing, and Applications.

Technology and Innovation

U.S. News ranks George �鶹��Ƶ as the No. 1 public university in the state for innovation.
George �鶹��Ƶ research has more than 100 unique industry partners and more than 230 unique university partners. Of those 100 unique industry partners, 13 are Fortune 500 companies. George �鶹��Ƶ also has partnerships with 118 of the 146 R1 universities.
The College of Engineering and Computing enrollment has grown to an all-time high of nearly 11,000 students, or 27% of George �鶹��Ƶ’s total student population.
George �鶹��Ƶ is about to lead its first NASA mission.
George �鶹��Ƶ offers such state-of-the-art facilities as the �鶹��Ƶ Autonomy and Robotics Center; the Biomedical Research Lab, one of 12 biosafety level-3 labs in the nation; the Forensic Science Research and Training Laboratory, one of eight “body farms” of its type in the country; and the Nanofabrication Facility, Northern Virginia’s only academic/core clean room facility accessible for workforce training.
In recent years, George �鶹��Ƶ started the country’s first cybersecurity engineering program and opened the first College of Public Health and first School of Computing in the state.
George �鶹��Ƶ offers an ethics in artificial intelligence (AI) minor, the first such program in the country.

Workforce

In May, more than 10,000 George �鶹��Ƶ students, from 114 countries and all 50 states, earned their degrees.
73% of in-state graduates stay in Virginia—3% higher than public four-year institutions in the state—and 29% of out-of-state students remain in Virginia after graduation, 9% higher than the state average.
More than 15,000 internships are posted in George �鶹��Ƶ’s database annually, and 89% are open to sophomore and juniors. �鶹��Ƶ 78% are paid internships, and George �鶹��Ƶ students have received more than $238,000 toward unpaid internships from University Career Services.
George �鶹��Ƶ fills critical vacancies in the workforce through the Tech Talent Investment Program, a partnership with the state.

Economy

In the Class of 2024, 41% of undergraduates and 44% of graduate students earned degrees in STEM and health sciences fields.
George �鶹��Ƶ has been cited by several publications, including U.S. News & World Report, the Wall Street Journal, and Washington Monthly, as the top public university in Virginia for the upward mobility of its graduates, and the New York Times ranks George �鶹��Ƶ the top public university in the state in its economic diversity index.
�鶹��Ƶ Enterprise, which operates 25 Small Business Development Centers around the state, is the host to federal, state, and local programs that support a portfolio of more than 30,000 start-ups and small businesses. Last year �鶹��Ƶ Enterprise companies received more than $3.7 billion in follow-on funding, and more than 40,000 entrepreneurs, small business owners, students, and research faculty attended 900+ workshops and educational programs, received individual counseling, were assisted with product development, resided in one of five incubators, or received intellectual property advice.
88% of Class of 2023 survey respondents report they are employed in positions related to their career goals.

Quality of Life

George �鶹��Ƶ, the most diverse public university in the state, is in the top 10 for the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) free speech and open inquiry rankings.
George �鶹��Ƶ has a 5 Star rating from the Campus Pride Index.
George �鶹��Ƶ this spring earned a Gold rating for being a military friendly university, its latest honor for serving the military population. �鶹��Ƶ 1 in 10 George �鶹��Ƶ students is active or former military or a military dependent.
George �鶹��Ƶ's Center for Community Mental Health is the main training clinic for �鶹��Ƶ doctoral candidates in clinical psychology, as well as students in other behavioral health disciplines. CCMH provides evidence-based, accessible, affordable and culturally sensitive therapy and testing services to our Northern Virginia community.
The �鶹��Ƶ and Partners (MAP) interprofessional clinics serve the uninsured and refugee community within Prince William and Fairfax counties.
George �鶹��Ƶ is the cultural hub of Northern Virginia, offering the community world-class events in the arts, Division I collegiate athletics, youth and family programming, and access to recreational facilities.

Virginia has now topped the CNBC business rankings for the sixth time since 2007 and for the third time in five years.

Student Health Services’ designation for LGBTQ+ health care practices is the latest recognition of George �鶹��Ƶ’s inclusive campus environment Shayla Brown Thu, 05/30/2024 - 12:51

�鶹��Ƶ’s Student Health Services (SHS) is one of 462 health care facilities to receive the “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer” designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's 2024 Healthcare Equality Index. 

“Medicine in general has a significant history of systemic inequality, so one of the big focuses of my job is to make sure that we are addressing those inequalities and promoting health equity,” said Megan Symanowitz, SHS’s Access to Research and Inclusive Excellence health equity lead nurse. “SHS is very enthusiastic about supporting our LGBTQ+ students and learning more about how to better serve that population.”

This year was George �鶹��Ƶ’s first time applying for the designation, said Symanowitz.

“It's something we've been working on at the clinic for years now in collaboration with the LGBTQ+ Resource Center and George �鶹��Ƶ’s School of Nursing. They've really helped us to identify areas where we needed to serve this community better,” said Symanowitz, who is also an alumna of the School of Nursing.

For example, acknowledging the pronouns and chosen name of every individual is one area where staff received input and made improvements, she said.

“The center guided us in making in our electronic medical health records, so people are able to self-identify their sexuality, and trans or nonbinary statuses if they want,” said Symanowitz.

“That way from the very first time we interact with a student, we’re addressing them correctly and they're not constantly having to explain themselves.”

Their team also conducts Safe Zone training, name change clinics, trans health workshops, and provides regular updates on the best health practices for the LGBTQ+ community.

This designation, which exemplifies how George �鶹��Ƶ facilities go above and beyond the average health care practices of LGBTQ+ patient care in higher education, is one of several inclusive recognitions George �鶹��Ƶ has received.

Last year, George �鶹��Ƶ was one of 30 universities in the United States and the only Virginia-based institute to be awarded a “best of the best” ranking by Campus Pride.

George �鶹��Ƶ also received a five-star Premiere Campus ranking by the Campus Pride Index, the highest possible ranking, said Josh Kinchen, director of LGBTQ+ Resources Center.

According to Forbes Advisor, George �鶹��Ƶ is the #1 online LGBTQ+ friendly college of 2024.

“Student Health Services' recent designation, coupled with Forbes Advisor naming us the top LGBTQ-friendly university, really speaks to the efforts of our faculty, staff, and students in making George �鶹��Ƶ a place where everyone can be their authentic selves,” said Mary Lucal, vice president and chief human resources officer at George �鶹��Ƶ.

As of August 2023, George �鶹��Ƶ is one of 20 Division-I institutions to achieve a score of 100 on the Athletic Equity Index, in part due to efforts of the George �鶹��Ƶ Athletics LGBTQ+ Student-Athlete Group.

“We often collaborate with athletics and offices like the resources center to expand our audience,” said Jake Kornfeld, a senior government international politics major and co-president of Pride Alliance, a registered student organization of George �鶹��Ƶ.

“Our main goal is to provide safe spaces for healing and asking questions,” he said.

For example, the Pride Alliance organized an event where former Harvard swimmer Schuyler Bailar, the first transgender athlete to compete in on a NCAA Division I men’s team, came to speak at George �鶹��Ƶ’s Fairfax Campus.

“He’s from the [D.C.] area, and he swam at George �鶹��Ƶ’s pool as a kid. He shared his story about being a trans athlete. That was something that was really meaningful for a lot of people at George �鶹��Ƶ,” said Kornfeld.

Collaborative efforts across different offices, affinity groups, and departments show George �鶹��Ƶ’s commitment to the LGBTQ+ community and to promoting inclusivity and diversity.

Other resources for the health and safety of the LGBTQ+ community at George �鶹��Ƶ include the LGBTQ+ Peer Mentoring Program, LGBTQ+ residential Learning Community, and the Safe Zone+ Workshop Series among others.

“What we want is for families and students to be able to choose George �鶹��Ƶ as a place where they feel that they can be academically successful while also being who they are without fear of violence or discrimination, and thrive in their identity,” said Kinchen.

George �鶹��Ƶ’s nursing doctorate program is 1st among public universities in U.S. News and World Report graduate program rankings; the law school is top three in the Washington, Maryland and Virginia region

�鶹��Ƶ’s nursing programs climbed to the top in graduate program rankings from U.S. News and World Report, ready to meet the commonwealth’s increased workforce demands for highly skilled career-ready health care talent.

�鶹��Ƶ’s doctor of nursing practice program ranked No. 1 among public institutions—up 27 spots from last year—and No. 2 among institutions nationally—up 37 spots. The nursing master’s program came in at No. 4 (up 17 spots) for public universities and No. 10 (up 28) nationally.

The master of public health program also jumped ahead 23 spots to become No. 53 nationally among all institutions, and 35th among publics. The social work program is 47th among public institutions, and the heath systems management program is 17th among public institutions and 32nd nationally. �鶹��Ƶ is home to Virginia’s first College of Public Health.

"At �鶹��Ƶ, our focus is clear: to foster excellence and innovation in public health education, research, and practice,” said College of Public Health Dean Melissa Perry. “As the pioneering College of Public Health in Virginia, we are setting the standard for interprofessional education in this vital field. Our programs are designed to equip the next generation of health professionals with the knowledge and skills to address the complex health challenges of our time."

Overall this year, �鶹��Ƶ has 21 graduate programs in the top 50 among public universities and 14 programs in the top 50 of all universities nationally. (All U.S. News graduate program rankings, including previous years, are available here.)

Antonin Scalia Law School’s law program advanced to No. 11 among public schools and No. 28 among all law schools nationally. With this move, it ranks third among all law schools in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland. The part-time program ranks second nationally among all public law schools.

“The law school achieved the highest ranking in the school’s history at No. 28,” said Scalia Law Dean Ken Randall. “The part-time JD program remains among the top five nationally. Despite its relative youth, Scalia is ranked No. 3 among the 16 law schools in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland, behind only UVA and Georgetown.”

The College of Education and Human Development’s special education program gained ground as well, coming in at No. 16 for publics (up one) and No. 17 for all institutions (up two).

“We are so proud of our special education program,” said Dean Ingrid Guerra-López. “This recognition affirms our commitment to excellence, innovation, and the belief that every individual has the potential to make a meaningful impact in the world. It is a testament to our faculty, staff, and students, who work tirelessly to push boundaries and inspire change.”

The Schar School of Policy and Government is 4th in homeland security both nationally and among publics. The school ranks 39th nationally overall and 26th among publics for public affairs; 10th among publics for nonprofit management (13th nationally); 33 nationally and 24 among publics for public management and leadership; and No. 31 nationally and No. 17 among publics for public policy analysis.

“These rankings are affirmation of the strong quality of the Schar School’s academic programs and cutting-edge research,” said Schar School Dean Mark Rozell. “The continued growth in the rankings aligns to the value proposition that Schar provides to students and career-seekers located in the Washington, D.C., region, offering direct access to leaders, news makers, policy advocates, and amazing faculty expertise.”

“�鶹��Ƶ has made significant investments in graduate education and the latest U.S. News rankings reflect our commitment to excellence as well as reaffirm the quality and hard work of our faculty, students, and staff,” Interim Provost Ken Walsh said. “I’m proud that our teaching and learning is recognized, as well as the impact of research and scholarship these programs produce.”

In 2022, �鶹��Ƶ launched its Graduate Division, expanding student support services and creating a dedicated graduate success center, to increase graduate funding for programs. New professional development programs, such as the Accelerate to Industry program, the Graduate Student Career Conference, the Communication Academy four-part performance workshop series, and a Skillcraft Series for graduate teaching through the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning, offer students a roadmap combining their academic learning with work-readiness skills.

U.S. News announced April 8 that they would delay the release of Engineering School rankings and rankings for Clinical Psychology programs, as well as Medical School rankings.
