Left vs right, liberal vs conservative, blue vs red: political polarization has become a hot topic in American media as both a cause and a symptom of growing tensions across the country.</span></p> <p>But what’s missing from the conversation is the solution. How do we find common ground and bridge these growing gaps to create a more peaceful future?</p> <p>In the <a href="https://carterschool.gmu.edu/research-impact/carter-school-peace-labs/pivot-peace-lab-polarization-and-violence-transformed">Polarization and Violence Transformed (PiVoT) Peace Lab</a> in the <a href="https://carterschool.gmu.edu/">Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution</a>, researchers and practitioners are developing methods for peace-oriented responses to the negative impacts of extreme polarization and conflict around the globe.</p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2025-10/picture_jpeg_2022.jpg?itok=_-QQIFe0" width="250" height="350" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Daniel Rothbart. Photo by Creative Services/Office of University Branding</figcaption> </figure> <p>“Most protracted violent conflicts are identity-based, meaning that the militants of one identity group are in a violent engagement with the militants or civilians of another identity group,” said <a href="https://carterschool.gmu.edu/profiles/drothbar">Daniel Rothbart</a>, Druscilla French Chair in Conflict Analysis and Resolution and director of the PiVoT Peace Lab. “That type of destructive polarization that encourages dehumanization is often at the center of these conflicts.”</p> <p>The lab hosts a number of student- and researcher-led projects diving deeply into polarization: its causes, its consequences, and its possible solutions.</p> <p>“It’s created for me this exciting opportunity to not only explore these important issues, but also to work with amazing students at all levels of our program,” said Rothbart.</p> <p>One of those students is PiVoT Peace Lab manager Randy Lioz. Lioz, a master’s student in conflict analysis and resolution, developed an interest in the study of polarization in 2016, when conversations with friends and family about the 2016 presidential election highlighted contrasting viewpoints.</p> <p>“I thought that what we’re missing are the tools and skills to have these conversations that could bring us into better understanding with one another,” he said. Since pivoting his career from the automotive industry to peacebuilding, Lioz has worked with practitioners and academics to develop methods and strategies for engaging opposite sides in relationship building that can break the cycles of dehumanization that fuel negative polarization.</p> <p>“We need to understand what forces exist and how they push people toward radicalization, extremism, and alienation,” Lioz explained, “and then we need to figure out the best interventions.”</p> <p>“Our mission as peacebuilders is to not only understand violent conflicts, but to help change the relationship among antagonist groups and help them transform,” said Rothbart.</p> <p>As part of the peace lab’s mission to develop methods of reducing or eliminating the negative impacts of polarization and to foster this transformation, one of Lioz’s ongoing projects is leading the <a href="https://pivot.carterschool.gmu.edu/delta/">Depolarization Labs and Trainers Alliance</a> (DeLTA). DeLTA brings scholars and practitioners together to build connections and explore pathways for bridging the growing divide.</p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2025-10/rlioz2024brand-highres-3-683x1024.jpg?itok=sFwvV21V" width="233" height="350" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Randy Lioz. Photo provided.</figcaption> </figure> <p>“Putting nonprofit partners in the same room as academics gives folks who are working in this field a place where they can talk about their research and connect it back to practice on the ground,” Lioz said.</p> <p>DeLTA’s <a href="https://pivot.carterschool.gmu.edu/october-2025-delta-conference/">upcoming conference</a> on October 27, “Pathways Forward: How Can We Restore Trust and Faith in America?” will give students, scholars, and practitioners the opportunity to learn about intervention techniques from national nonprofit leaders and university professors across the greater Washington, D.C., region.</p> <p>“Right now, our faith in our institutions has been shaken, and this is existential for us. We need to rebuild our social capital and our trust in each other,” said Lioz. “I want people to get inspired by the work that’s being done to bring us all back into community with one another, particularly students who might want to pursue this field as a career. I want this to motivate us to tackle this existential problem of our time.”</p> <p>But still, the question posed by the media remains: Can we come back from this?</p> <p>Lioz and Rothbart believe so.</p> <p>“Just as the forces of polarization have increased, I see the forces of depolarization are also intensifying. I see it in the strength and resilience that all over the nation, in how people are protecting the most vulnerable populations,” said Rothbart. “We talk about polarization as if it’s an inevitability; polarization is not inevitable, nor is it irreversible. There are so many reasons to be hopeful.”<br>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="1b3ef1a7-5552-466a-a9b2-6fd87fc09e1b"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://pivot.carterschool.gmu.edu/october-2025-delta-conference/"> <p class="cta__title">Learn more about the 2025 DeLTA conference <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_associated_people" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-associated-people"> <h2>In This Story</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">People Mentioned in This Story</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/profiles/drothbar" hreflang="und">Daniel Rothbart</a></div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="e6df8ae1-89a0-4410-974a-23a0f426e2b7" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related news</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-b763674b444ff500ed8c266811023f6059a7030dacafa7f8f2ff2c58a2d9fdf0"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-10/pivot-peace-lab-transforms-conflict-connection" hreflang="en">PiVoT Peace Lab transforms conflict into connection</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">October 17, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-09/fall-2025-peace-week-focuses-bridging-peacebuilding-development-and-security" hreflang="en">Fall 2025 Peace Week focuses on bridging peacebuilding, development, and security</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">September 17, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-05/carter-school-dean-leads-peacebuilding-workshop-hiroshima" hreflang="en">Carter School dean leads peacebuilding workshop in Hiroshima </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 30, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-04/carter-school-students-attend-oxford-consortium-human-rights" hreflang="en">Carter School students attend the Oxford Consortium for Human Rights</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">April 21, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-04/announcing-recipients-2025-presidential-awards-faculty-excellence" hreflang="en">Announcing the recipients of the 2025 Presidential Awards for Faculty Excellence</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">April 16, 2025</div></div></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/116" hreflang="en">Campus News</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/271" hreflang="en">Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1241" hreflang="en">Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/21341" hreflang="en">PiVoT Peace Lab</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/20826" hreflang="en">GCI-Grand Challenge Initiative</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/15406" hreflang="en">鶹Ƶ Square</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Fri, 17 Oct 2025 13:35:41 +0000 Sarah Holland 343891 at George 鶹Ƶ hosts grand celebration of Fuse at 鶹Ƶ Square /news/2025-09/george-mason-hosts-grand-celebration-fuse-mason-square <span>George 鶹Ƶ hosts grand celebration of Fuse at 鶹Ƶ Square</span> <span><span>Colleen Rich</span></span> <span><time datetime="2025-09-23T16:21:17-04:00" title="Tuesday, September 23, 2025 - Now, they’re each trying to do something new: make it go faster, sing a song, drive in reverse, or flash its lights like a turn signal. With every spin-out, slow-motion crash, or odd sound, the students return to their laptops to reprogram the bot and try again. If one student is struggling, they turn to their peers. Together, they’re making the robots work.</p> <p>This is the inaugural <a href="https://accessacademy.cehd.gmu.edu/ai-summer-camp">ACCESS Academy Artificial Intelligence Summer Camp</a>. Open to all 9th—12th graders across Virginia, the camp runs three one-week sessions at the <a href="https://accessacademy.cehd.gmu.edu/">ACCESS Academy</a> headquarters in <a href="https://masonsquare.gmu.edu/fuse">Fuse at 鶹Ƶ Square</a>. Through hands-on exploration of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, students can imagine and begin preparing for technology-sector careers. Only in its first year, the camp already has 130 total participants over the course of three sessions.</p> <p>"The goal of ACCESS Academy is to create a more inclusive pathway to college and high-demand careers for students who may not have previously seen those opportunities as within reach,” said Dean Ingrid Guerra-López of <a href="https://cehd.gmu.edu/">鶹Ƶ’s College of Education and Human Development</a> (CEHD).</p> <p>“We continue to hear from industries that we are not preparing our high school graduates to be employable,” said <a href="https://cehd.gmu.edu/people/faculty/rpamas">Roberto Pamas</a>, professor of education leadership and director of the ACCESS Academy. Prior to his transition to teaching higher education, Pamas served 30 years in Fairfax County Public Schools as both an educator and an administrator. “They want both technology skills and soft skills. How to collaborate, how to communicate: we’re building those skills in these programs. And CEHD is in the business of teaching, learning, and leading.”</p> <p>AI was a natural choice for the camp’s curriculum. Working with faculty from the <a href="https://cec.gmu.edu/">College of Engineering and Computing</a>, the CEHD ACCESS Academy team developed a five-day program to build foundational skills to set students up for success.</p> <figure role="group"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/medium/public/2025-08/250725502_copy.jpg?itok=FwSbTyjS" width="560" height="374" alt="Two students share a laptop, trying to solve a problem" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Photo by Ron Aira/Office of University Branding</figcaption> </figure> <p>The first four days of the camp focus on conceptual understanding and real-world applications of those ideas. On Friday, guest speakers from local education innovation technology company Kovexa engaged with students as part of a tinkering lab. &nbsp;</p> <p>“AI represents a cutting-edge field and a dynamic problem space where students can practice essential skills such as critical thinking, ethical reasoning, collaboration, and problem-solving,” said Guerra-López. “It’s not just about coding, but about asking better questions, evaluating outputs, and imaging new possibilities.”</p> <p>The students agree.&nbsp;</p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2025-08/250725500_copy.jpg?itok=9d3tZ_Wm" width="350" height="350" alt="A student kneels by the paper track with a micro:bit robot. Her father works in cybersecurity, and she hopes to follow in his footsteps. “We had an AI training, and it was very challenging. The process of figuring it out and competing with one another was fun.”</p> <p>Arkash Reith, who is entering his sophomore year at Evergreen Christian School, said, “This camp gave me experience in what AI can help you do as well as what it can’t help you do. Like, with coding, it can help with basic stuff, but nothing too hard.”</p> <p>After each day, students write down one word to describe their experience. From this first week, the white board is filled with words like “fun,” “inspiring,” and “fascinating.”</p> <p>Guerra-López envisions the bootcamp not only as a hands-on learning experience for students, but as a launchpad for expanding access to AI education across the region.</p> <p>“The tinkering lab model in particular is a powerful way to reduce anxiety around emerging technologies, increase skill and self-efficacy for both students and educators, and foster a stronger sense of community around innovation,” she said.</p> <p>Plans are underway to explore how this model can scale—both to offer more advanced learning tracks for students and to engage educators in professional development that supports responsible, inclusive digital innovation.</p> <p>“George 鶹Ƶ is a keeper of knowledge for Northern Virginia,” Pamas said. “And I believe it is our moral imperative to share that knowledge, particularly with students who otherwise might not have access to higher education.”<br>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" Through the Junior Professional Program, an initiative aimed at increasing representation from underrepresented nations in the UN, she earned a coveted and highly competitive position, with work spanning multiple sectors, in the external relations department, the vital diplomatic arm of the organization.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>“I applied not thinking much of it,” she said. “Then lo and behold I got an email saying I have an interview. And then another interview and another interview, and then a written exam. And I started packing for Paris.”</span></p> <p><span>One of her earliest tasks was preparing a briefing for a high-profile meeting between the director-general of UNESCO and King Abdullah of Jordan—a task that underscored both the trust placed in her abilities and the magnitude of the work she undertook. Al Mahmood also played a role in protocol coordination during UNESCO's historic flag-raising ceremony in Paris, attended by then-first lady Jill Biden, an event marking the United States’ return to the organization.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>While excelling in her role at UNESCO, she never lost sight of her academic ambitions, and at the end of her contract she decided to earn her degree. She attended Schar School classes remotely, including logging on for synchronous courses complicated by the six-hour time difference with Paris, a testament to her dedication.&nbsp;</span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/2025-03/manar-al-mahmood-2-web.jpg" width="300" height="424" alt="A young woman in a dress stands in an elaborate foyer with chandeliers and frescos on the ceiling." loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Manar Khalid Al Mahmood attends an opera at Paris’ 1875 Palais Garnier. (“Yeah, boy, it was brutal,” she confided.)&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>While living in Paris, she founded an English-language philosophy discussion group, inspired by the Socrates Café model, where French and international participants explored diverse perspectives on political and social issues, an initiative that reflects her broader commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding across cultures.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>As Al Mahmood embarks on the next phase of her academic journey—finally experiencing George 鶹Ƶ and Washington, D.C., in person—she looks forward to engaging more deeply with professors, attending policy events, and contributing to intellectual discourse.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>“Professor&nbsp;</span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/profiles/elaipson"><span>Ellen Laipson</span></a><span> always emails us about events that are happening on campus, and I’m always missing them,” she said, referencing the director of the&nbsp;</span><a href="http://csps.gmu.edu/" target="_blank"><span>Center for Security Policy Studies</span></a><span>. “But I look forward to finally being able to go.”</span></p> <p><span>Al Mahmood is particularly interested in engaging with think tanks, such as the Middle East Institute and the Arab Gulf States Institute, and organizations that align with her regional expertise and aspirations.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>With Saudi Arabia undergoing a period of rapid transformation—hosting the World Expo in 2030 and the FIFA World Cup in 2034—Al Mahmood sees a wealth of opportunities ahead. While she is open to international opportunities, she is also keen on contributing to her home country’s evolving role on the world stage, whether through diplomacy, foreign affairs, or international cultural initiatives.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>Ready to set foot in 鶹Ƶ Square in Arlington, Virginia, this summer, she is eager to immerse herself in the policy landscape firsthand, as well as attending the in-person campus events she had to miss while studying from overseas.</span></p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_associated_people" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-associated-people"> <h2>In This Story</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">People Mentioned in This Story</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/profiles/elaipson" hreflang="und">Ellen Laipson</a></div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="2d2dcdb2-76f3-4250-a480-7a63db673560"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://schar.gmu.edu/why-study-here/admissions/request-more-information"> <p class="cta__title">Request Schar School program information <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"> <div class="field field--name-field-cta-icon field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Icon</div> <div class="field__item"><div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-font-awesome-icon field--type-fontawesome-icon field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Icon</div> <div class="field__item"><div class="fontawesome-icons"> <div class="fontawesome-icon"> <i class="fas fa-info-circle" data-fa-transform data-fa-mask style="--fa-primary-color: #000000;
