The �鶹��Ƶ Department of Statistics welcomed eight new faculty members in 2020 – 2021.

“The research portfolios of these new faculty members are excellent, representing wide-ranging important fields in modern statistics and data science,” says Jiayang Sun, department chair.

The new faculty members, listed alphabetically, are as follows: Jonathan Auerbach, Isuru Dassanayake, Inchi Hu, David Kepplinger, Ben Seiyon Lee, Mary Meyer, Kenneth Pasiah, and Lily Wang.

According to Kepplinger, the Department of Statistics, which is a part of the School of Computing within �鶹��Ƶ’s College of Engineering and Computing, is poised for growth.

“The research culture at �鶹��Ƶ and the statistics department, in particular, is built around the idea of collaboration,” he says. “Everyone is open to sharing ideas and joining forces.”

A recent article in AMSTAT News describes the background of each of the eight new hires, who are internationally recognized experts in the areas of health care, economics, technology, clinical trials, and public policy.

�鶹��Ƶ is ranked as one of the top 50 schools for computer science, according to CSRankings.org. It’s an accomplishment that could entice the recruitment of more graduate and doctoral students into �鶹��Ƶ, says Sanjeev Setia, interim divisional dean at �鶹��Ƶ’s School of Computing.

This is the first time computer science at �鶹��Ƶ has made it into the CSRankings.org top 50 list, says Setia, and it links �鶹��Ƶ’s computer science programs with similar programs at other well-known colleges in the United States like Stanford, Virginia Tech, Carnegie Mellon, and Princeton.

“The csrankings.org ranking shows the tremendous strides the department has made towards being recognized externally as a world-class research department,” says Setia.

According to CSRankings.org, the ranking identifies institutions and faculty actively engaged in research across several areas of computer science, based on the number of publications by faculty that have appeared at the most selective conferences in each area of computer science.

“The top 50 ranking in CSrankings.org is a reflection of the outstanding quality of the faculty the department has hired in recent years,” says Setia.  

David S. Rosenblum, chair of the Department of Computer Science at �鶹��Ƶ, says the achievement is a testament to prospects for a great future.

“It is extremely gratifying to see that �鶹��Ƶ computer science now ranks among the top 50 computer science departments in the U.S.,” says Rosenblum. “A deep dive into the rankings reveals several areas of strength, including a top 40 ranking in artificial intelligence (an area in which a third of our faculty are doing research) and a top-15 ranking in software engineering.”
